Black Cats at Christmas?
The very idea of writing about a black cat at Christmas seems odd, doesn’t it? Especially since black cats are a staple of Halloween stories and lore. I’ve got a love for black cats. I have one and he continues to crack me up every day. One moment he’s suave and sophisticated and the next he’s chasing his tail.
I happened to be watching him one day and wondered what kind of personality he’d have if he were a shifter. Would he be suave? Or would he be a goofball? He swatted at an ornament on the Christmas tree and the idea of Shifter’s Challenge came to me. My cat could be both the goofball and the sophisticate—especially if he were a male model who modeled human clothes and animal fare, like collars and cat clothes.
So who would he chase after if he were in love? Since my cat’s interested in chasing and pouncing on the dogs, I decided to go in another direction. Enter the elf. The challenge was to hook back up with the elf. Could it be done? And how fast could I write the story to get every detail down?
I’m happy to say I did get the story written and I love these two characters. See if you do, too!

Steve Moore, a black cat shifter, breaks into the North Pole Christmas party in his cat form. Easy enough. No one imagines a black cat would be out of place in a warm building in the middle of the winter. But Steve’s not there to sample the cupcakes or eggnog. No, he’s there to find the one Elf who makes his heart race — Landon. Is Landon still interested in the shifter? They only spent one night together. Things could fall apart once they find each other again, but Steve’s betting the Elf is craving him, too.
Time to see what magic Christmas has in store.

So many Elves and so many happy faces. He’d never find Landon in the myriad of red and white. His heart sank. He’d been a fool to hunt for the Elf. They’d spent one night together. Landon probably didn’t even remember him.
Three Elves wandered past the tree, and the sound of one of the male Elves’ voices caught his attention. Steve perked his ears and zeroed in on the dark-haired Elf.
Landon.
Steve dug his claws into the branch. Part of him wanted to jump from the tree and into Landon’s arms. The rest of him erred on the side of staying put. Landon seemed happy and like he was having the time of his life. He couldn’t intrude on that. The blond Elf kept touching Landon’s arm and laughing at everything Landon said. The other Elf nodded. His long black hair swished as he moved his head. The three Elves acted so comfortable together. They had to be close friends. Hell, they seemed to barely notice the rest of the party. Maybe that was why Landon hadn’t stuck around — he had men at home waiting for him. Had he been duped?
Nah, Landon wasn’t the type to screw with people… was he?
Steve adjusted his weight on the branch and closed his eyes. He’d had enough of watching Landon and company. His anger melted as he pictured that lone night with Landon. They’d had a hot time together. They’d shared drinks, danced and made love until dawn. He could still feel the tightness of Landon’s asshole around his cock. The words he’d said when Landon unzipped resonated in Steve’s head.
Damn, you’re bigger than I thought you’d be. Not Steve’s best moment, but he’d been honest. Maybe the stupid comment had been the reason Landon left.
“There you are,” a voice boomed.
Steve didn’t bother to open his eyes. Probably another man wanting Landon’s attention. Why torture himself by looking?
“I knew I’d find you here.” The owner of the deep voice grew closer. “Can’t hide from me.”
I’ll bet you can’t, Steve thought. Still, his curiosity won out. He opened his eyes to watch the show. Instead of seeing people gathered around Landon, Steve was face-to-face with a large man in a red suit. Santa? How had Santa known he was in the tree?
“Landon, your Christmas present has finally arrived.” Santa reached into the tree and gathered Steve into his arms. “He’s got a little sap on him. Might want to go somewhere private and clean him off.”
Landon’s present? Steve stared at the wide-eyed Elf. He wanted answers, and apparently so did Landon. Steve blinked. If there was any chance he’d get down to the truth, then being Landon’s present was a good idea.
And here’s a little bit about me:
When she’s not writing the stories in her head, Megan Slayer can be found luxuriating in her hot tub with her two vampire Cabana boys, Luke and Jeremy. She has the tendency to run a tad too far with her muse, so she has to hide in the head of her alter ego, but the boys don’t seem to mind.
When she’s not obsessing over her whip collection, she can be found picking up her kidlet from school. She enjoys writing in all genres, but writing about men in love suits her fancy best. The cabana boys are willing to serve, unless she needs them. She always need them. So be nice to Javier or he will bite–on command.
She also masquerades under the name Wendi Zwaduk and is published through Ellora’s Cave, Changeling Press, Decadent Publishing , Liquid Silver Books, MLR Press, Resplendence Publishing, and Total-E-Bound Publishing.
