Excerpt of the Week: Blood, Sex and Leers by Kate Hill
Tiago closed his eyes and concentrated, changing into attire that he believed would fit the time–buckled shoes, breeches, a waistcoat and a cravat, all in basic black and white. His long, straight hair became wavy and he sprouted a moustache and goatee.
When he finished the change, he released a pent-up breath and opened his eyes to find Sefu watching him carefully.
“Shapeshifting really does put a strain on you, doesn’t it?” Sefu asked quietly.
“Sometimes,” Tiago grudgingly admitted. After so many years in prison, with his powers neutralized, his skills needed refreshing. His first attempt at changing shape once he’d been freed from the silver detention bracelet, had been painful. Silver prevented Aspectians from changing shape and prisoners in maximum security were not allowed to use their shapeshifting abilities at any time during their sentence.
Now each time he shifted with more ease than the last. Soon he would be as versatile as ever.
“Have you ever seen an Earth wolf?” Tiago asked.
Sefu snorted. “Seen one? I’ve fought in the shape of a wolf many times in the arena.”
“Good. Change into one now. I’ll enter the palace as a traveling nobleman and you’ll be my trained wolf.”
“Hey! Why do I always have to be an animal?”
Tiago glared at him. “Be happy I didn’t suggest you shift into a horse and let me ride you to the castle. ”
Sefu grinned roguishly. “You can ride me anytime.”
“Can you keep your mind off sex, at least until we rescue Zandra?”
“I’ll do my best. Now tell me why I need to be your pet wolf.”
“Because I’m more familiar with this time period and will probably be better able to con our hosts. While I’m keeping them occupied, you can use your wolfish sense of smell to track down Zandra.”
A smile flirted with Sefu’s lips. “Oh. So you’re really the decoy and I’m the hero.”
Tiago raised his eyes to the heavens. “Whatever. Just don’t mess up this plan, Sefu. Remember, Zandra is restrained by silver. Her life is truly in danger.”
