Because warriors are willing to die for something—a homeland or an ideology or beings they’re seeking to protect or other important things I can’t think about right now. That type of passion is sexy, can be infectious and is bound to add conflict to any delicious erotic romance.
Rage is a cyborg, half machine, half man. He has been manufactured to fight wars for humans. That (and breeding) is his sole purpose. He fights all day, returns to the battle station at night for repairs, food, and energy inputs, and then leaves to fight again.
Rage doesn’t believe in the battles he participates in. He is controlled (and abused) by his human masters. His goal is to escape the battle station and voyage to the cyborg Homeland, a planet ruled by his brethren.
Rage plans to continue fighting once he reaches this space. He’s a warrior. Fighting is what he does. But, once he’s free, he’ll only fight the battles he truly supports.
Being a warrior, his view of the worlds is also straight forward. He views humans as the enemy. Enemies, in his mind, are all bad, deserving of the deaths he delivers. He can kill them with no guilt.
Then he meets Joan, a curvaceous human female, and his black and white view splits into a thousand shades of gray (thousands, not fifty – grins). She’s human, the enemy.
Yet, as much as he wants to see her as bad, he can’t. What is a warrior to do? Rage has to kill Joan to escape, to support the cause he believes in. But ending her life would be wrong for the worlds and for his heart.
