A Favorite Autumn Treat: My favorite autumn treat is candy corn. The only time of year I eat it is during October or just after Halloween. It’s my sugary guilty pleasure.

Excerpt:
The house’s creepy silence gnawed at Kelvin. He stuffed the card back into his pocket and froze.
A sound like symbols banging together rang out. Faint, but distinct enough for Kelvin to stand in his place and try to ascertain the direction of the sound.
A door stood in the rear wall of the living room. The sound had come from beyond that door.
Now or never.
Kelvin could bolt for the main door and get the hell out, or find out why there was an odd musical rhythm in the next room. The parlor had a rank smell and looked like it had been decorated in the nineteen fifties. Not that Kelvin had experienced the nineteen fifties, but he’d seen enough movies.
His hand trembled as he placed it on the doorknob, knowing he was doing one of those horror movie no-nos. The door creaked open and his suspicion was sated. There was indeed the sound of symbols crashing, although it was a toy. A wind-up little toy clown banging two symbols together.
Who wound it up?
A loud thud crashed above his head. Someone or something lurked upstairs. He wasn’t alone in the house, which all of a sudden didn’t surprise him.
“Ali!” He shouted out the lawyer’s name, uncertain why. He had no idea who could be upstairs. Ali was just a name on a card that stood fresh in his mind.
The hair on the back of Kelvin’s neck stood up as he approached the stairway at the back part of the house. He placed his hand on the banister and had visions of Martin Balsam in Psycho.
“Hello!” Kelvin shouted sharply, to no avail. Whoever it was apparently knew he was here. The whole situation smelled of a setup.
Like last year?
No, last year wasn’t a set up. Circumstances of convenience, maybe, but no one knew who was who at the costume ball. That’s one thing Mother prided herself at keeping secret.
With his leg shaking, he placed his foot on the bottom step of the stairwell. The old wooden planks were barely visible in the fading light of day. It took all his strength to lift his leg and take the next step. Wracked with fear, he knew he shouldn’t be going upstairs.
Yet he did it anyway. Just like in a damned old horror movie.
Didn’t I learn my lesson last year?
Curiosity ruled. It may have killed the cat, but it sure as hell wouldn’t kill Kelvin. He had to find out what waited above him.
The sweat on his palm caused his hand to slip on the banister. He swiped his hand along the back of his jeans to dry it, although that didn’t stop his heart from working overtime.
Kelvin managed his way up the remainder of the steps until he stood on a creaky landing. A dimly lit hallway with light sneaking in through dust-encrusted windows snaked to the left. To his right, dark shadows danced around a partially ajar door.
