Welcome to the July issue of my newsletter.

Last month was a busy release month for me. Savage Amusement and Rediscovering Thor were released and also Unquenchable, a collection of four Ancient Blood stories became available in paperback from Ellora's Cave.
This month the fourth book in my Horsemen series, Winter Stallion, is tentatively scheduled for release by Ellora's Cave. Right now I'm working on another book in the Horsemen series, this one featuring two characters who are introduced in Winter Stallion. I'm also finishing up Mate Night, a m/m/m ménage that will be coming soon from Changeling Press.
One more book announcement--Raptvyns' Rogue, the sequel to Windswept, has recently been accepted for publication by Ellora's Cave. More about the book can be found below in the Upcoming Releases section.

KH: Would you tell us about your latest and upcoming releases?
DC: My latest release will be with Berkley, but won't release until Feb 08. It's called The Accidental Werewolf and it's about a woman who sells multi-level cosmetics (think Mary Kay. LOL), and while walking her teacup poodle, Muffin one night, she's accidentally bitten by what she thinks is another dog :)
KH: What projects are you working on now?
DC: Right now I'm working on the second installment of The Accidental series. That too is with Berkley and it's called Accidentally Dead. In the first book, the heroine Marty has a friend named Nina. She's tough and has a potty mouth and she ends up bitten on the job. She's a dental hygienist whose vampire patient accidentally bites her :) This will be available in July 08.
KH: To you, what makes a great romance hero?
DC: A guy with a sense of humor. One who'll defend you no matter what, but isn't afraid to tell you when he thinks his woman is WRONG. LOL
KH: How about a great romance heroine?
DC: She needs a sense of humor too. I love a smart-mouthed heroine who's self-sufficient and a quick thinker, but allows herself to be vulnerable to the hero :)
KH: If you could meet one of your characters, which one would it be?
DC: Oh, it'd definitely be the girls from The Accidental Series.
KH: Tell us something about your group TTABBB.
DC: Well, essentially, we're the group about absolutely nothing. Much like Seinfeld, the show about nothing. LOLLOL. We have author days on Wednesday, where we invite a guest author to come and play, but for the most part we just hang out and talk. Kind of like a bunch of women at the bus stop, gabbing about nothing.

Well, it was official.
Lavender was soooooo not in her color wheel anymore. Not looking like this, anyway.
It clashed with her hair and made her skin look sallow.
Marty Andrews was now an autumn. Thus, fall colors would best suit her new pallor. Greens, gold and a couple of shades of yellow were presently her complexion's new friend.
However, the color lavender?
Not so much.
That was the color she'd once been so suited to. A spring color. Or was it winter?
Spring, winter, spring, winter?
Sweet mother, she couldn't even remember her seasons of color. Where were her color wheel of life skills? Each season had colors it represented. Any woman worth her salt knew that. Didn't they?
She shook her head and fought for a moment of clarity. Yes, damn it. Lavender was a spring color. It was the color all the newly promoted, first level Bobbie-Sue Cosmetics reps wore and the color of the suit she'd worn with pride until a week ago.
Jesus, everything was such a blur since that night. She was lucky to remember her own name let alone her seasons of color. It had all become a mixed up myriad of sound, light and surreal happenings.
It had steadily worsened since he'd shown up.

KH: Would you tell us about your latest and upcoming releases?
IJ: Hi Kate, thanks for having me. My latest release was Viola's Inheritance from Amber Quill Press. It's about a divorced woman who gets quite an inheritance when her dear friend and colleague unexpectedly passes away. He leaves her a priceless statue of Isis and two very handsome Egyptian men. LOL It's a short that was a lot of fun to write.
Upcoming, I have two releases. One I haven't even dreamed up a title for but I'd better because it will be out in August I think. LOL The other is called Ropacabana and it's part of an exciting multi-author series coming from Changeling Press in September. The series is Viva Los Regalos and its set in a near future Vegas like world that is a vacationer's dream. Inside it's run by the paranormal mafia. LOL My heroine is the most famous fetish dancer in the city who's got her eye on the new bouncer. She can't get his attention though and she's frustrated.
That is until a very wealthy tourist tells her boss he likes to watch and he wants to watch HER with a very dominant man. Wonder who they pick for that? LOL
KH: What projects are you working on now?
IJ: I'm finishing up Ropacabana and then moving on to the story for AQP. The as yet untitled one will be part of a collection called Temptation's Price.
KH: To you, what makes a great romance hero?
IJ: A good mind, a good heart, and respect for the heroine. Being good in bed doesn't hurt either.LOL But that's secondary to me even as an erotic romance writer. It's got to be about the emotion.
KH: How about a great romance heroine?
IJ: Again, a strong mind. The heroine, however, needs an even stronger will. She should be a fighter, compassionate, and be able to laugh at herself. There's nothing worse to me than a self-important heroine.
KH: If you could meet one of your characters, which one would it be?
IJ: Easy, Mikhail Turgenev from my Eyes of the Leopard series. He was the bad guy I didn't totally redeem. Even though he has Nadia now and he's contented, part of him is still intrinsically evil and I really like that. LOL
KH: Tell us something about your group TTABBB.
IJ: The Babes, gosh. What an amazing group of folks. Our group is the Seinfeld of Yahoo loops. It's a loop about nothing but talking about whatever we want. LOL We do have promo Wednesdays - a very controlled promo session. Outside of that no promo is allowed and that's just how we like it. We don't want folks who fly in, dump a promo, and make us feel cheap. You have to stay and talk to us. And you have to call us the next day. (Just kidding) LOL I love that group that I share with Dakota Cassidy and Michelle Hoppe. I'm just lucky to be there with two such talented authors.

MH: It's been awhile, Kate. The last year has seen many changes in my life and my writing was on hold for a few months while I took care of family and moved into my new home. Now things are getting back to normal, I'm back to writing and looking forward to getting some new projects off the presses.
KH: What projects are you working on now?
MH: I'm currently working on two novellas. One stars a wise cracking investigative reporter, Julia Essex and a six hundred year old vampire who is not amused by Julia's interference in his attempts to stop a murderer.
The other is a ghost story. Nicholas Ravenhurst is in jail for a murder he didn't commit and his only hope for freedom is the ghost of his great grandfather's father (Nicholas Ravenhurst) and landscape designer Becca Bennett. As Becca fights to find the truth and free Nicholas, she must also deal with her growing love and her confusion over which Nicholas Ravenhurst she is in love with.
KH: To you, what makes a great romance hero?
MH: This is a tough one, Kate. First and foremost, I think he has to be believable. For me, I write alpha males so he has to be strong but not overpowering. I also like my heroes to be romantic. Roses, feathers, oils, blind folds, and well-phrased words of love are a must.
KH: How about a great romance heroine?
MH: I like my heroines to be strong. I try to make sure they are not TSTL (to stupid to live) because that drives me nuts. I also want my heroines to be open, honest, loving, and willing to explore their sexuality.
KH: If you could meet one of your characters, which one would it be?
MH: Jason Hunter for sure. When I wrote my first book, Club Belle Tori, I created my hero, Jason Hunter from a combination of all the men in my life, from my high school sweetheart to my husband at the time. I gave Jason the best of all of them and he turned out to be one sexy hunk. Now that I'm single again, he is the man I want ~smiles~.
KH: Tell us something about your group TTABBB.
MH: ~Smiles~ The Truth About Books, Big Hair and Babes, is a group I created with authors Isabella Jordan and Dakota Cassidy. We have known each other for a number of years and we all like to play and hate to promo so we came up with the idea of a group where our fans and friends could come and just enjoy a conversation without a lot of promo. So was born TTABBB which we call Babeville. There is an ongoing debate about which is better Pepsi or Coke and new members will be drilled (nicely) about which they prefer. For the most part, we just have a lot of fun.

A short time later, they stood in a private stall in the tack house. Terra, Zach and Moor occupied other stalls. Phillipa closed the door for privacy, yet conversation from the others drifted through the walls. Her attention wasn't focused on their companions' discussions, but on Luther.
He'd removed his blanket and hung it over a trunk to dry. Though he'd cooled down since his flight, his body was still quite warm. Dirt streaked his legs and speckled his coat. Together they used currycombs and soft towels to clean him off. Once he was fairly clean, he closed his eyes and a quiver shot through him as his full-coat disappeared, leaving his man-torso once again covered in human skin.
Phillipa took a moment to admire his broad shoulders, powerful chest and sleek belly.

"I got it while I was assigned to a Gathering Party in the tropics. I wouldn't recommend it for severe muscle aches, but I like the scent and it works well enough after a normal flight."
She dipped her fingers into the salve, placed a fair amount in her palm and rubbed her hands together. Starting at his equine shoulder, she began the massage. She'd groomed Horsemen in the past and, though it was an intimate duty, it had never felt this arousing. KH: What is your favorite romance subgenre?
AL: Paranormal Lately it seems that's all I'm reading, but I do enjoy historical, time-travel and contemporary.
Would you tell us about your latest and upcoming releases?
AL:Of course! Eternal Obsession, book 2 in the Eternal Series came out in March this year. This is Jacques and Kelly's story that started in book 1, Eternal Embrace, but of course the reader was left hanging where they were concerned.
Eternal Obsession: A punch in the nose was the last thing Jacques expected when he came face to face with Kelly for the first time since leaving her a year ago. Now convincing her that he made a mistake and getting her back in his life is the hard part. When she finally does forgive him, nothing contains the sparks they create, lighting a Parisian night.
But another lurks the streets of Paris, weaving his way into Kelly's mind. She is the very image of the love lost to him 150 years ago and nothing will stand in his way of reclaiming her. Jacques is determined to protect the self-willed Kelly. His new enemy is older and stronger than Jacques by centuries, but Jacques will risk all to ensure Kelly remains forever at his side....
My next release is scheduled for September 4th. It's book 3, Eternal Surrender. I'm very excited about this one. The reader meets Damian in book 2 and he is a tall drink of water and not very nice all the time, though he really does have a big heart, just never found the right woman to give it to, till he meets Alyssa, and he will gladly give it to her, but first he must convince her not to stake it.
Eternal Surrender: After her family is killed by vampires, Alyssa vows revenge against them all. Even Damian, a vampire who insists on protecting her. Alyssa tries to fight her desire for the one she considers and enemy, but evil has never looked so good....
KH: What projects are you working on now?
AL: Several. I'm working on Eternally right now. It will have books 4-6 of the Eternal series in one book, Eternal Salvation, Eternal Abandon and Eternal Promise.
In Salvation Christian finally gets his story. He makes a brief introduction in Embrace, but readers will get to meet him for the first time in Obsession and again in Surrender. Who's his Heroine? I think you'll figure it out in Obsession and he'll have his hands full to be sure. I'll give you a hint: you met her in Embrace, she's young, spunky and commented to Dimitri and Cassandra that they should consider "Gosh, guys, get a room, why don't ya!"
Abandon is Alexander Forbes story. We don't ever meet him till his story, but you meet his enemy, Michael Windsor, in Obsession and Alex's name is mentioned here and there throughout the series. Our hero made a terrible mistake when he was newly turned centuries ago and the time has come for him to face that mistake in the form of Michael Windsor. His heroine is his maid's adopted daughter, whom he has supported financially all her life by sending her to the very best schools, etc. Now, she's returned to the states very much grown up and very much a woman.
Promise is Michael Windsor's story. He meets his heroine in the past, immediately after she's been turned and with no idea of what's happened to her. He takes her under his wing for protection and must battle against a new enemy that he himself made.
I'm also working on, A Real Man. This one is very much at the beginning stages. I'm trying my hand at something new, so we'll see how it spins out. Our gorgeous man is a clone, trained to be an assassin for a secret branch of the government, but he has his own thoughts and feelings and escapes the compound where he and others like him are held. When he escapes he finds help in Rachel, a woman who has no idea who or what he is, but after they spend "forced" time together there's no denying the attraction between them. They must fight to stay alive, keep one step ahead of those hunting them and save the other their death sentence from an experiment gone wrong, Or that is how I see it so far, anyway.
I'm also working on some contemporaries. A Platinum Purchase and its sequel, Fun Off Trail. They are romantic comedies with a lot of spice thrown in.
KH: To you, what makes a great romance hero?
AL: Tall, dark and handsome, of course. Strong, dangerous, determined, intelligent with the ability to be kind and loving to his lady.
KH: How about a great romance heroine?
AL: Again, strong, determined, intelligent and dangerous when she has to be. She has to give the hero a run for his money.
KH: If you could meet one of your characters, which one would it be?
AL: I have to pick just one? My goodness, that is a really hard decision, but I think at this point I'd have to go with Damian. He is so yummy and so dangerous. He makes me go weak in the knees just to write him.
KH: Do you have a website, blog, newsletter or email where readers can reach you?

Alexander and Caesar docked their ship in the wilderness several miles from Ramesses' vessel and approached on foot, keeping to the trees and moving almost silently. Their scanners finally picked up on Ramesses, telling them he was close by. Soon they heard the sound of running water and came upon a small cascade pouring into a pool in the clearing. The full moon brightened the clearing, reflecting on the dark water and illuminating Ramesses who stood naked beneath the cascade. With his eyes closed and face tilted up, he allowed the water to rush over him.
Both men paused behind a thick tree and stared. Caesar's heartbeat quickened and he moistened his lips that had gone dry. By the Horned God, Ramesses had a gorgeous body. Broad shoulders, muscled arms, a powerful back and chest, a lean waist and abs Caesar longed to trace with his tongue. He had a great bottom, too, large and hard-looking. The muscles in his buttocks and long, lean legs flexed as he stepped away from the cascade, wiping water from his eyes.

Movement in the trees on the other side of the pool drew their attention. They wore thick, silvery leather-like shirts and trousers and carried lazar pistols and shocker clubs.
Naked and vulnerable, Ramesses stood calmly, yet Caesar noted his large blue eyes keenly observing the Jodyians.
"We better help him." Caesar was about to step forward, but Alexander grasped his arm.
"Watch first."
"Those must be the Jodyians he told us about at The Purple Asteroid. He's outnumbered. We have to -- "
"Shh!" Alexander snapped, nodding toward the pool.
"You didn't think you'd actually get away from us?" said one of the slavers. "All we had to do was follow your smell."
"How can you smell anything over your own stench?" Ramesses replied.
"I'm going to enjoy seeing you in the zoo," sneered another slaver. "Our boss will be happy to have his first Capriethe on display. You've given us quite a chase, goat man. I'm almost sorry to see it end."
Their shocker clubs drawn, the group attacked Ramesses simultaneously.
Caesar drew a deep breath, his muscles tense as he watched Ramesses defend himself with fists and horns. Though he fought with street style rather than with the military precision of Alexander or the grace of Caesar, Ramesses was incredibly strong and seemed to have little fear of pain. Several whacks from the shocker clubs didn't put him out of commission and he even managed to disarm two of the slavers, claiming their weapons. He swung the clubs with accuracy, defending himself with skill and attacking with a vengeance. Still he was outnumbered by creatures who possessed three times the strength of even the most athletic Capriethe.
"Now," Alexander said.

Would you tell us about your latest and upcoming releases?
CS: I have another book in my Hot in the Saddle series coming out on Sept 19th from Ellora's Cave, titled Scout'n'Cole. Cole had no trouble attracting women. The Russell men were all blessed physically, and Cole was no exception. However, finding a woman who could match his passion for the wilderness as well as ignite passions of a different kind in his life was the problem.
Scout Windrider knew that love wasn't for her. She'd yet to encounter a man who took her breath away, and figured it was just as well. What man would want to hook up with a woman who spent most of her life in the wild, tracking mountain lions?
Neither of them could have foreseen being paired in a no-kill hunt turned deadly would force them to confront an explosive attraction hot enough to consume them with its heat. KH: What projects are you working on now?
CS: Sally Painter and I are working on a new series that will be published through Ellora's Cave - The Hussies. Each of the books in the series is linked by a mysterious woman from a time long past who enlists the aid of a woman to save a man in peril. I have one book already under contract for the series that I hope will release in Dec of this year titled All in Time:

KH: To you, what makes a great romance hero?
CS: A man who is intelligent, has strength that is tempered with sensitivity, a man who has his own demons to conquer and a man who is not afraid to succumb to the power of love.
KH: What do you like best about writing erotic romance?
CS: I suppose that would have to be the freedom it allows to explore the sexual dynamics between people.
KH: If you could meet one of your characters, which one would it be?
CS: Oh without a doubt it would be Wyatt Nashoba from Wyatt's Chance. He has enough angst to fill a tractor trailer, is strong yet vulnerable, sexy as hell and a tiny bit dangerous, making him an altogether irresistible man.
KH: Have you always been both a writer and an artist, or did you do one before the other?
CS: Yes, I guess I have always been both. I started reading and writing at age 3 and spent most of my childhood cooking up stories and illustrating them. But professionally I was an artist and photographer long before I became a publisher writer.
KH: What is your favorite thing about creating cover art?
CS: The variety. Each cover is different so it never gets boring. I love taking photos for covers, and also combining photos to create a new image that didn't exist before. It's a little like bringing a vision to life, and that's how I feel when I'm working on a cover. I read about the characters and then see them come to life for me. It's quite exciting :)
KH: If I had your ability to create pictures of gorgeous heroes, I'd want to be doing that all the time. How do you balance writing with art? Do you have a set daily schedule for each or do you work on whatever calls to you at the time?
CS: LOL, well I have to say that taking photos of gorgeous men, or using photos taken by others of gorgeous men to create covers is certainly the most fun job in the world. I actually work a regular job with Ellora's Cave, where I'm the Graphic Services Manager for the various imprints. That means I get to not only create covers but work with an amazing team of talented artists, photographers and designers. It's the perfect job and I adore it I think I'm probably the luckiest person in the world when it comes to my job because I am excited about getting up every day and going to work. I never even think about writing during the day because I'm so into what I'm doing.
But when the work day is done then my mind turns to writing, and so I do that in the evenings, on the weekends and on my holidays and vacations. I find it to be a really nice balance to my creative life and because I do both I never get tired of either. Like I said, I'm one of the lucky ones. I found avenues for my passions and get to explore them in an environment that welcomes creativity and encourages people to stretch a bit and not settle for what everyone else is doing. Ellora's Cave -- she rocks :)

Marcellus' brow furrowed. There was no doubt the woman was attracted to him, just as he was to her. Both were doing their best to keep this session impersonal, but something told him they would fail.

KH: Would you tell us about Devarian Renegades?
SD: Renegades is the fifth book, now, in my Devarian series, all set in a futuristic universe where women have become the rulers and all men are slaves. The entire idea came from a conversation with a girlfriend, who commented (I think jokingly, but I won't swear to it!) that maybe what we ought to do is ban all men from political office and take over running this planet ourselves. Hey! says Sierra. There's a story in that!
And in the Devarian universe, that's exactly what's happened.
The men are divided into two classes -- work-slaves, who are invariably castrated, and pleasure-slaves, who are groomed and trained for that one function (yum!) But Merrin Trafalgar, a captain in the Nine-Star League's military, finds herself fascinated by an enigmatic and handsome work-slave, Rolen. Their relationship, of course, is anathema in the rigidly-defined roles of their society, and when fascination turns to passion, there is only one answer for the clandestine lovers -- go renegade!
One of my favorite scenes in the book is when Rolen, who of course has essentially no experience with women, asks Merrin's two pleasure-slaves to teach him how to make love... That was a fun one to write!
KH: Please tell us about your upcoming releases and what you're working on now.
SD: I'm very excited this month to be having my first Ellora's Cave release! Make Me is one of the Tricks and Treats Quickies, featuring Larissa, a very strong, independent advertising executive who nevertheless has always dreamed of a man who can dominate her. Only problem is, most men find her a bit intimidating -- but "most men" are decidedly not Adrian Dane, the devastatingly handsome vampire who hires Larissa to advertise his new club opening on Halloween. And when Adrian realizes Larissa is the life mate he's spent centuries searching for, he'll stop at nothing to make her his... It's coming out Oct. 10th, and I hope folks will enjoy it! I know I did. :p
Then, later in the month, I have a brand-new book in the award-winning Dragon's Heir series coming out from Changeling! Lara and her mate Zendar have returned to Djarera, bringing Dravidian -- who is a member of the Astraea, the lost dragon clan -- with them. But when both Lara and Zendar find themselves attracted to the blue dragon, can they find room in their life-bond for three? (Hell, yes! :-)
KH: What is your favorite thing about writing erotic romance?
SD: Definitely, the freedom to write all kinds of stories. Fantasy and sci-fi and paranormal and humor -- and hot sex! I mean, what's not to love? One week I can mate mid-air in dragon form, and the next I can be at the mercy of a rakish 18th century pirate... What other genre gives you that sort of freedom?
KH: To you, what makes a great romance hero?
SD: Integrity. First and foremost. Everything else is negotiable, to me -- well, except sexual attractiveness. And that doesn't necessarily mean looks, either -- or even that the hero would be MY ideal man. One book I enjoyed a lot recently was Lori Foster's Just a Hint, Clint, and one of the things that really did it for me was that while Clint's not the guy I would have picked out of a line-up, he is absolutely perfect for Julie. And the fact that he's not a fashion-plate jutting jaw, darkly brooding hero makes him even more loveable, in that book. Of course, each book is different! But yeah, that integrity thing, that inner core that is simply not open to debate-- for me, that's a given.
KH: How about a great romance heroine?
SD: Hee! That one's harder. My heroines vary so widely -- all the way from Soleyla Devarian, who takes on an entire galactic empire to free the pleasure-slave she loves (real kick ass and take names kind of girl!) to Lu, my werewolf heroine in Sex and the Single Werewolf, who's almost pathetic in her need to be loved. I say almost, because I totally understand her, I understand how deep that need is -- it's impossible for me not to empathize. That was a hard book to write in some ways; I kept wanting to cuddle Lu close and tell her it's okay, everything's going to be okay, hee! But of course being a writer is like being a mom -- if you really love them, you've got to let them grow up. You've got to let them go out into the big wide world and take their lumps, get hurt, put their hearts at risk... because if you don't, they never win their way through to the happy ending.
At heart with all of them, I think, is an emotional vulnerability -- no matter how together they have the rest of their life, there's something that doesn't quite click, you know? Some area where they're still fumbling, flawed, clueless -- and that's the part they really have to wrestle with in the process of the relationship.
KH: If you could meet one of your characters, which one would it be?
SD: Wolf. Definitely Wolf. He's the hero of Wolf Bound, which is one of my favorite stories. He just walked into my head and heart, and I completely fell in love with him. Yeah, he exists nowhere but on paper, but I would fight to the death to keep Wolf safe. Absolutely.
KH: Do you have a website, blog, newsletter or email where readers can reach you?

Prologue
September, 2000Moonlight cast eerie shadows on the three distinctive figures sweeping through the double doors of the colonial mansion's front entrance.
Jerahmy Ward, the eldest of the group, tall with pale green eyes, walked two paces ahead of the others. Long black hair, accented with white wings at his temples, draped broad shoulders covered with a black wool coat. The impeccable black shirt and trousers beneath created a startling contrast to his pale, beardless face. If not for Jerahmy's wealth, the realtor would have ended their working relationship months ago. The idea of midnight showings both annoyed and frightened him, but the commission he stood to gain from the sale of such a house as Mr. Ward demanded would be nearly enough to ensure an early retirement.
To Jerahmy's right, a shorter, though no less imposing, man glanced down his nose at his elegant surroundings as if unimpressed by the size and beauty of the mansion. His pale blond hair was bound tightly at his nape. The blue silk shirt tucked into black pants matched the color of his slanted eyes. Introduced earlier as Devlin Carnell, the blond was a new addition to Mr. Ward's strange party.
The most outwardly normal of the three, Victor Snow, flanked Jerahmy's other side. Young, surely no older than twenty-seven or twenty-eight, he towered over his companions by more than a head. Ash brown hair, with an obvious wave in spite of its shortness, framed his ruggedly handsome face. Midnight blue eyes swept the foyer and lingered on the winding staircase leading to the second floor. In spite of Victor's normal appearance, the realtor knew he was as weird as Jerahmy Ward himself. The man believed he could sense ghosts and had been consulted by Jerahmy as to the haunting factor in every house they had visited over the past six months.
Clearing his throat and trying not to appear as anxious as he felt, the realtor said, "As you requested, the house has over nine thousand square feet of living space, not including the basement and attic. It also has the guest house you wanted."
Ignoring the realtor, Jerahmy tossed Victor a sidelong glance. "Don't get too attached to them, Victor."
"The. . .them?" the realtor stammered. "Surely you don't think this place is haunted?"
Victor grinned at Jerahmy. "As long as you don't paint it black."
"To fit his mood?" Devlin arched an eyebrow.
Thoroughly confused by a conversation that seemed to spring out of the blue, the realtor continued up the stairs. If he didn't know better, he might think the men communicated telepathically.
"If you gentlemen will come with me, I'll show you the rest of the house."
The trio followed him, speaking only of technical issues. How was the roof? Did the basement flood? Devlin seemed to be an authority on just about everything from plumbing to building materials.
"Are you in construction, Mr. Carnell?"
"I'm an architect," came the snapping reply from the attic, where the blond seemed to be visually taking apart the very fabric of the house.
Several hours later, after a thorough examination of the mansion and the guest house behind it, the four men stood in the large kitchen.
"Well?" Jerahmy's penetrating gaze switched from Devlin to Victor.
"The place looks solid," Devlin stated, folding his arms across his chest.
"And clean," Victor added.
Clean. Meaning the mental case confirmed that no ghosts were present. The realtor's heartbeat quickened. Yes, yes, yes. Early retirement!
"You're certain there is nothing in this house?" Jerahmy held Victor's gaze.
"No, but the guest house--"
"I don't care about the guest house. Any problems there can be dealt with later."
"So, you're interested?" the realtor asked.
"Yes. Make the arrangements."
"Excellent. I'll speak with the owners and call you tomorrow."
The bizarre trio swept out of the house, followed by the realtor, whose hands trembled with excitement as he locked the doors. Tonight was definite cause for celebration.
"Mr. Douglas."
The realtor turned to Jerahmy, who had paused before stepping into his car. "Yes, Mr. Ward?"
"Enjoy your early retirement."
The realtor's smile faded and a shiver rippled down his spine. How in the world had he known about that?
With a slight smirk on his lips, Jerahmy stepped into the car.

Arno followed Zamiel's lead to the lake and they both dipped into the water, dragging their talons and splashing with their wings before changing to their man form.
Arno closed his eyes and smiled, enjoying the cool water against his skin. It felt so good to finally wash after several days stuck in a nest. He glanced at Zamiel, who ducked under the water and resurfaced, running his hands through his short, wet hair. He stood, water lapping his flat belly and streaking his gorgeous torso, drawing even more attention to his sleek muscles. Droplets glistened in his chest hair and Arno resisted the urge to lick his lips.
Zamiel's piercing blue gaze met his and a quiver of passion ran down Arno's spine.
Damn, this guy can't get any hotter.
"Come here," Zamiel said, wading toward Arno.
"Yeah?" Arno tried to sound nonchalant, but his legs felt strangely weak as he approached his rescuer.
When they stood only inches from one another, Zamiel reached toward Arno's head. "You have a twig in your hair," he said in a low, husky voice, his gaze holding Arno captive.
"Didn't think someone like you would notice a little thing like that."
Zamiel gave a low grunt. "Depends on who I'm looking at."
Good gods, is he coming on to me? Arno's pulse raced and beneath the water his cock sprang to life. He'd suspected Zamiel found him attractive, though it might have been just a fantasy on his part. The very notion of being trapped in this gorgeous rogue's arms, of feeling the caress of his chiseled lips and warm, wet tongue, was enough to make Arno's head spin.
After dropping the twig in the water, Zamiel ran his fingertips down Arno's cheek so gently he scarcely felt his touch. Arno drew a sharp breath and moved even closer, swallowing a bit more loudly than he'd intended.
He was acting like a damn fledgling with his first fuck instead of an experienced man in his early thirties. Yet he'd never met anyone quite like Zamiel. This guy did things to him, body and soul, that no one ever had before.
Zamiel's gaze became so intense that Arno forgot everything except the man in front of him. Tentatively, Zamiel cupped Arno's cheek. His lips parted slightly and he took Arno's face in both hands and kissed him.
Fuck, this was like the kiss he'd spent his life dreaming of. As much as Arno had enjoyed making love with Jindra, theirs had been a relationship based on close friendship and loneliness. They'd satisfied each other's needs, yet both had been searching for their soul mates. At this moment, Arno knew he had finally found his and he was probably the worst man in the world for him.
Zamiel hated his flock, even though he had once been part of it. Who knew how he'd react if he found out where Arno was from? He'd seen the rage and violence in the man's eyes and heard it in his voice, yet deep inside he refused to believe Zamiel would do him real harm. The thought of it was too painful. It would be a cruel trick of fate for Arno to have finally found the man of his dreams, only to be despised by him.
With every stroke of Zamiel's tongue, every gentle caress of his lips, Arno's desire soared to greater heights. His cock stiffened and belly clenched. He felt Zamiel's cock swell between their bodies that were now pressed so close their hearts seemed to beat as one. Zamiel's fingers wove through Arno's long blond hair while Arno ran his hands over Zamiel's shoulders and back, relishing the sensation of his rock-hard muscles beneath water-slicked flesh. He told himself they were caught in the moment, that Zamiel was irresistible. That he was so thrilled to be alive after Pepik's attack he wanted to celebrate by doing something wild and utterly fulfilling.

Roth Lawrence drew a ragged breath. His lungs burned from the frigid air. Bitter cold wind sliced across his face as he crawled over ice and snow. Even the blood that, just a short time ago, had flowed from his injured side froze in the ferocious weather.
Weak from exhaustion and the fall he'd taken when he'd slipped down the mountainside, he could scarcely move. Yet he knew if he stopped he'd die. Of course his chances of survival were practically zero either way.
Several weeks ago he and a select group of students from his university had begun a winter expedition, wanting to understand for themselves the living conditions of a world they had only read about or knew through artifacts.
Earlier, when the group had retired for some much needed sleep, Roth had been unable to rest. The urge to leave the cold tent for the even colder outdoors overcame him. Bundled in his protective gear, he walked only a short distance away from the tent. Then sudden squalls blinded and confused him. He thought he was traveling in the direction of his tent, but instead wandered away from the camp. When the weather cleared enough for him to see, his campsite was nowhere in sight. Knowing he couldn't survive long under such conditions, he shouted for his companions, but they must not have heard.
That seemed like hours ago.
Roth wasn't sure why he continued on in the vain hope of finding the others. This frozen land which he had so loved to study would soon become his icy grave.
He slipped and fell flat on his face. Snow bit into his flesh, but he could scarcely muster the strength to lift his head. When he did, he knew for certain his time had come, for he was undoubtedly hallucinating.
In the distance he saw a warm glow in the mountainside, like firelight dancing in a cave.
He managed a weak, humorless laugh. The motion sent blood trickling from his chapped lips and while the salty taste made him slightly sick, the warmth was almost welcome.
With agonizing slowness, he dragged himself toward the glow. Halfway there he noticed a large, pale figure emerge from the cave. Too small for a bear yet too large for a wolf, it trotted toward him on all fours. Soon it came near enough for him to see that it was indeed a wolf. Enormous, with a shaggy grayish-white pelt and slanted blue eyes, it paused, lowering its head to sniff Roth's face.
"I must be dead," he murmured. His strength finally gave out and he collapsed at the magnificent beast's feet.
