One weekend on a much-needed day off, Shell stopped at a consignment shop while on the lookout for a decent couch at a fair price. She noticed a tarnished genie lamp and bought it on a whim.
When she brought it home and started polishing it, to her surprise out popped the man of her dreams.
Tall, dark, and bearded, the genie stared at her with boredom in his slanted amber eyes.
“Three wishes, mortal. Let’s get on with it. How much, what kind of mansion, and how famous do you want to be?” He snapped his bejeweled fingers as he spoke.
Her heart still pounding from fright, Shell squeaked, “What?”
The genie sighed and placed his hands on his narrow hips. “Your three wishes. What do you desire?”
“Three wishes. I’d ask if this is for real, but considering you just popped out of a lamp, it’s safe to say I’m not imagining this?”
“Nor do you appear intoxicated. Perhaps a stiff drink, as you mortals say, will speed this along?”
“No,” Shell said softly. She wasn’t going to waste a wish on a mere drink. “This is going to take some thought.”
The genie’s brow furrowed. He looked surprised. “You mean you truly don’t know what you want?”
“I know what I want, but I’m not sure who to inflict it on—yet.”
