“Is something wrong, Max?” she asked with concern.
He smiled. “I’m glad you’re back to calling me Max instead of Mr. Barnes, considering the nature of this meeting.”
“Pardon?”
He tugged a sprig of mistletoe from his pocket, stepped close to her, and held it over their heads. “I felt the burning need for a Christmas kiss. Would you consider obliging me, Miss Martin?”
Narrowing her eyes and feigning annoyance, she said, “I’m not sure. Perhaps instead of a kiss you deserve coal in your stocking.”
“Are you dashing my hopes again?”
