Lovers for centuries, Vampire Network agents Brett and Mercedes finally consider commitment while working on the case of a brutal killer.
Note: About Time is a very short, spicy story in the world of Ancient Blood.
Excerpt:
October 30, 1989
“I knew I’d find you here.” Mercedes Machado folded her arms, tapped her booted foot, and narrowed her eyes at Brett Jiminez who sat at his desk, yawning.
“Good for you, Mercedes. Your investigation skills are as sharp as ever.” Leaning back in his chair, Brett stared at her in irritation. The woman had always gotten under his skin in every way—from best to worst. Maybe that was why their relationship had lasted so long. Oh, they sometimes spent months, even years, physically apart, but their spiritual connection never weakened.
“This case is making you crazy.” Mercedes pulled a chair over to his desk. She dropped into it. Crossing her ankle over her knee, she leaned back and lounged as well as one could in the spartan office of the Madrid branch of the Vampire Network. When their son, Adam, had assumed leadership of the Network, Brett and Mercedes had agreed to work as agents, investigating and preventing crimes in the vampire community.
Brett’s most recent assignment—a serial killer stalking the streets of Madrid—had all but consumed him.
“I’m no crazier now than I ever was.”
“Your eyes are so bloodshot you look like a bloodsucker in a cheap movie. You even have the beginning of the beard you said you’d never grow. Why? Because you’ve been working on this case nonstop and haven’t slept in days.”
“How would you know? I’m sure your days haven’t been spent pining over me. Not with an appetite like yours.”
Shrugging, she examined the tips of her painted nails. “You’re as charming as ever, Brett.”
“There was a time you thought I was.”
