\u201cI\u2019m sorry, Maylynn.\u201d He wasn\u2019t entirely sure why he was apologizing. He just didn\u2019t like to see her uncomfortable.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m happy for you,\u201d she repeated.<\/p>\n

Then he realized what the problem was. He hadn\u2019t anticipated this.<\/p>\n

He moved closer. \u201cI\u2019m so sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her forced smile finally dropped. \u201cWhy didn\u2019t you tell me sooner?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt didn\u2019t occur to me\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat I might be attracted to you?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy aren\u2019t you wearing your collar?\u201d Anger prickled the edge of her voice.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mother\u2019s last wish was that I find my father. I\u2019ve been following her notes. She was convinced he was somewhere in this area.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWait\u2026 Your mother\u2019s name was Adalina?\u201d<\/p>\n

He nodded. With the number of times the shelter was mentioned in the notes, he figured his mother and Maylynn had met.<\/p>\n

Anger flashed in her eyes. \u201cYou still should\u2019ve told me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy\u2019d you play with me like that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI swear that wasn\u2019t my intent.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou knew damn well what was going on. Was it a game\u2014see if you still had it? If you could still get the chicks?\u201d<\/p>\n

Under the anger in her eyes, he saw the hurt. He swore he could feel it exactly, as if it was his own.<\/p>\n

He shifted even closer, just in front of her. \u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d he said again. His voice lowered, quieted. \u201cI didn\u2019t see what you were feeling because I was fighting so hard myself. I still am.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFighting what?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I felt the first time I saw you, what I\u2019m still feeling.\u201d<\/p>\n

She waited, glaring at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m attracted to you,\u201d he said. \u201cIntensely.\u201d<\/p>\n
