I was born in France. My family and I moved to Chicago during my early childhood years. Love it. Been there since.<\/p>\n

What is your job?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019m a psychiatrist and partner at Morgan, Moi, Wozniacki & Allen, Associates in Sexual Psychology, SC. I also teach Human Sexuality to college students.<\/p>\n

Who is your love interest?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Love interest? Ha! Jess is much more than merely an interest. She\u2019s my wife. And whatever it takes, I\u2019ll find the prick behind the death threat. Love interest? *shakes head* Jess is my entire world. She\u2019s mine.<\/p>\n

What is your favorite thing about Jess?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Her smile. It stops my heart. Thankfully, it starts right back up again when she touches me. I live to see her smile. Long for her gentle touch.<\/p>\n

What makes Jess sexy?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Have you read her master\u2019s thesis? I have. The sexual fantasies accounted for by patients who had undergone sedation was something. The way Jess captured it on paper was another. Her mind is beyond beautiful. She is my type of sexy.<\/p>\n

If you could give your past self a piece of advice, what would it be?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Everyone has a past. Jess has left mine where it belongs \u2014 in the past. She trusts me despite knowing everything, despite her fragile heart, and despite her own past. I\u2019m looking forward. There will be no repeat of my behavior from the past.<\/p>\n

Do you prefer one lover or multiple lovers?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve had plenty of women. Crappy sex without any real connection. But Jess, she lit a spark within me I\u2019d never felt, and she\u2019d barely touched me. We have the real thing. That miracle. That true moment when soul mates become one. She knows my position on this. I\u2019ve said it over and over. I don\u2019t share.<\/p>\n

Finally at ease with his mother, Matthew laughed, realizing that she, too, must have had a hand in teaching Jess how to cook.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was happy to help. She\u2019s going to be an excellent cook and mother, for that matter, one day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her words squeezed at Matthew\u2019s heart. He ran a hand through his curly hair, struggling with how to reply. \u201cI\u2019m not sure we\u2019ll have kids. Jess, she\u2019s off. Something\u2019s up.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWedding planning can be stressful,\u201d Marise offered.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. It\u2019s not that. At first, I didn\u2019t know what trigger was setting her off. But I finally realized when I mention anything about children or babies, she checks out completely.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAny idea why?\u201d<\/p>\n

Matthew wasn\u2019t one to speculate. Jess, not being ready to talk about it, wasn\u2019t helping him understand. But he knew history could be painful to overcome. He motioned toward a bench, acting on a strong desire to sit down and reflect. Following his mother, he sat and looked down at the sand, a pensive expression on his face.<\/p>\n

How could he tell Marise that Jess had been pregnant when she found out Jake had cheated on her, and that the day of the divorce hearing, she went into preterm labor? Or that a discrepancy in Jess\u2019s mind had her, in retrospect, believing she should have done everything possible to save her baby, but didn\u2019t, opting instead for comfort care in her own arms?<\/p>\n

Matthew knew the truth of the matter. He\u2019d seen the dates on the ultrasound, finding it one day as it slipped out from between the pages of a book, and spliced together a corrected timeframe. Jess had been barely twenty weeks along. And as she would have known from nursing school that because the chances of survival were thought to be impossible at twenty weeks, parents were advised to do exactly what she had done.<\/p>\n

Whether at twenty-two weeks or twenty, she\u2019d died inside that day. And to this day, Matthew was fairly certain she still harbored a belief that she had made a grave mistake and was endlessly blaming herself for the outcome. It was no wonder she\u2019d fallen into a deep depression. Matthew wanted nothing more than to help her.<\/p>\n

After a long moment in thought, he shrugged, still uncertain what, if anything, to say to his mom.<\/p>\n

Marise caressed his back, then shifted on the bench to look at him. \u201cBeing psychiatrists makes it challenging for us not to want to help, especially when we think we can. It\u2019s what we are trained to do. But sometimes, we are too close or simply aren\u2019t the best option for those we love. Even though they know we love them, they\u2019re not always ready to let us in.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re right. Jess said she would open up when she\u2019s ready.\u201d Though it made Matthew feel she wasn\u2019t comfortable enough with him to tell him what was truly bothering her. And that hurt him. \u201cI want to talk with her about starting a family, but I don\u2019t think it\u2019s something she wants.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDarling, there\u2019s no hurry. Enjoy making memories of the two of you first. In fact, you can start with a trip home. This Christmas.\u201d<\/p>\n

Matthew stared out to sea, mulling over his desires, Jess\u2019s fears, and an impromptu trip to France. Marise draped her arm over his shoulders, the sound of the waves the only noise breaking their silence.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know it\u2019s been a long time since you\u2019ve had Christmas at home with us, but we\u2019d love to have you. You could make a full holiday of it and take Jess to Paris. You certainly don\u2019t have to stay confined to the guest house.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe guest house?\u201d Matthew grimaced, uncertain as to why she hadn\u2019t offered their house to them.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re welcome to stay anywhere you\u2019d like. But if you\u2019re in need of some privacy, I suggest the guest house.\u201d<\/p>\n

Privacy.<\/em> His eyes darting from the ocean to Marise, Matthew pulled his mother to his chest. \u201cYou may have just helped me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Marise laughed and returned the embrace. \u201cI\u2019m more than happy to help, with anything. You need only to ask.\u201d<\/p>\n

Matthew leaned back, this time frowning. \u201cThere\u2019s something else going on with Jess you should know about.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, dear.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSomeone wants her dead.\u201d<\/p>\n

J.M. Maurer started working as a registered nurse in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit where she cared for critically ill children, transported them from outlying hospitals, and even picked up overtime hours treating patients of all ages while inside a hyperbaric chamber.<\/p>\n

When not writing, you can find her spending time with family and friends, exploring the outdoors, or attempting most any sport. She resides in Chicago with her husband and son.<\/p>\n
