He turned the bottle around in his hand and set it on the end table. \u201cDon\u2019t put me in this position. You know what would happen. Grace is his mother. She\u2019s the one who needs to stay with him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Regret tugged at her heart. \u201cI wouldn\u2019t take any time away from her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Parker groaned. \u201cJust you being there would make her feel uncomfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know why.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I\u2019ve stayed away for seventeen years,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was the adoption arrangement.\u201d<\/p>\n

She bit her lip. \u201cI can\u2019t stay away any longer.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou agreed to those terms in the contract. You terminated all parental rights.\u201d Parker stood and paced to the kitchen.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut it\u2019s not fair!\u201d She put down her water and began wringing her hands.<\/p>\n

Straightening his arms, he leaned against the bar. \u201cHailey, please don\u2019t start. I know how you feel\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou couldn\u2019t possibly know how I feel. I need to see him.\u201d She fought to control the bitterness in her voice.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

She rose, knocking over the water bottle. \u201cHe\u2019s my son!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot anymore, he isn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

The rebuke stung. \u201cHe\u2019ll always be my son!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you gave him up, you promised to keep your distance.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI have.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cForever.\u201d<\/p>\n

The reminder lanced her heart. \u201cYou\u2019re being unfair. He\u2019s dying.\u201d<\/p>\n

He slammed his fist on the bar. \u201cDon\u2019t say that. He can\u2019t die.\u201d Parker pushed himself up and stomped near the window, raising his hands to rest on top of his head as he faced the curtain.<\/p>\n

A muscle twitched in her hand. Her knees buckled. She sat on the edge of the couch, wringing her hands. \u201cI was young. I couldn\u2019t give Justin the life he deserved. I\u2019m not asking to take him back. I only want to see him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rubbing his jaw, he walked back to the couch and sat. The hard lines on his face softened. \u201cThe adoption papers were clear. No contact.\u201d He placed his hands on top of hers and stilled them. \u201cIf the decision was mine, I would allow it, but Grace would lose it if she found out you\u2019re Justin\u2019s biological mother.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her hands squeezed into tight fists. The urge was unbearable. \u201cI wouldn\u2019t tell her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Parker ran a hand through his hair. \u201cArgh! Don\u2019t you understand? She\u2019d take one look at your face and know the truth. Don\u2019t forget, you\u2019re the one who wanted us to protect him.\u201d<\/p>\n

She stood. \u201cWell, you did a hell of a fine job, didn\u2019t you? You divorced Grace and deserted him.<\/p>\n

Parenting takes sacrifice, Parker. You were too busy changing careers, and now he\u2019s messed up with drugs. How did that protect him?\u201d<\/p>\n

Standing, he reached for her.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. You stay away from me.\u201d She extended her hands and backed up a step. \u201cJustin\u2019s dying! Dying, Parker! And I don\u2019t know him\u2026You won\u2019t let me see my own son.\u201d<\/p>\n

He wrapped his arms around her.<\/p>\n

She pushed him, pummeling her fists against his chest with all her strength.<\/p>\n

He silently took his beating.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
