In my family store-bought costumes were prohibited. A measure of creativity\u2014coupled with simplicity and seasoned with a low-to-zero price tag\u2014was expected. Surprisingly, the costumes often won prizes and\/or grudging admiration. These are three of my favorites:<\/p>\n

Ghost: For my 6-year-old daughter: a white sheet with 2 holes for eyes & a hole for the mouth. Easy and effective. And reusable!<\/p>\n

Mummy: For me at age 12. My mother wrapped me in two rolls of toilet paper from head to toe. We thought it was cool\u2026until it began to rain.<\/p>\n

Gypsy: Finally a use for those Mardi Gras beads!<\/p>\n

She holds a BA from Vassar College, a diploma in Arabic Studies from the American University in Cairo, and Masters in Anthropology and in Library Science from the University of Chicago.
