\u201cDo you feel like telling me something about yourself now?\u201d Skye gazes at me with those amber wolf\u2019s eyes. It\u2019s like he can see through me. That\u2019s the thing about werewolves. With their heightened senses and their instincts they\u2019re like living lie detectors. And it\u2019s not that I\u2019ve lied to him at all. I just haven\u2019t offered complete answers, and that\u2019s my choice.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you want to know?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere to start.\u201d Skye grins and spins his stool halfway and back. He meets my gaze again. \u201cYou said you do an act with hoops. Is it for fun or a professional thing?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBoth.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd where do you perform?\u201d Skye prods. It\u2019s obvious he\u2019s trying to be patient.<\/p>\n

\u201cNowhere at the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n

He chuckles softly and scratches his beard. \u201cI\u2019m handling this wrong. Why don\u2019t you tell me what you want to tell me and we\u2019ll go from there.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat makes you think I want to tell you anything?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnyone ever tell you you\u2019re a pain in the ass?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOften. You haven\u2019t told me much about yourself, either.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDude. I\u2019ve brought you right into my den.\u201d He opens his long, muscular arms.<\/p>\n

Drawing a breath, I turn my attention to my food. Looking at him makes me hungry for something else. Right now I don\u2019t have the time or the strength for that. Who am I kidding? If he kissed me right now, I\u2019d be all over him. Fuck the bruised kidneys and cracked ribs. If I merge fully, it will kick my healing into overdrive, but I haven\u2019t done that since the last fight. It nearly killed me. When I\u2019m physically weak, it\u2019s harder to merge, but merging accelerates healing. Like everything else in life, it doesn\u2019t make sense. When you need something most, it\u2019s hardest to get.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy aren\u2019t you nearer to your pack?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s easy. I\u2019m a rogue wolf.\u201d<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not familiar enough with werewolves to understand that term.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlso called a lone wolf,\u201d he explains. \u201cI don\u2019t mind my brothers and sisters, but I like to be on my own. Alpha Forest uses my skills, but leaves me alone. It\u2019s a good deal for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI get that.\u201d I trace the rim of my water glass with my fingertip. \u201cI\u2019m sort of a lone wolf, too.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re not wolf. What are you? The doctor knows. I could get it out of him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s nice. He helps us out and you threaten him for information.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOr you could just tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n
