Room 5 was at the end. The door was ajar. Light and music spilled through the opening.<\/p>\n Harvey grabbed Al, who was about to push the door wide. \u201cWait,\u201d he whispered urgently. \u201cListen.\u201d<\/p>\n The melody swirled around them like smoke, mysterious and difficult to apprehend, shifting form and mood in each moment. Harvey recognized Bach\u2019s masterful D minor Partita, rendered with a purity and restraint that made Harvey ache. He closed his eyes and allowed the music to invade him, to overwhelm him. The notes soared heavenward, until he felt breathless in the thin atmosphere, then sank into low, throaty tones that vibrated deep in his gut.<\/p>\n He knew the piece well \u2013 could remember Richard performing it, to enthusiastic crowds \u2013 but now it seemed as though he had never truly heard it before. The playing was formal and precise yet somehow the control only heightened the emotional intensity. Pensive, questing, triumphant then subdued, the music ebbed and flowed in the darkened corridor.<\/p>\n \u201cShe\u2019s good,\u201d Al whispered.<\/p>\n \u201cShh!\u201d Harvey felt momentary rage at his brother\u2019s interruption, then that paltry emotion washed away in the tides of Bach\u2019s creation.
