\t She blocked his overhead strike and lashed out so hard and fast with the<\/p>\n

\t end of her staff that she finally found her mark directly over his heart.<\/p>\n

\t The impact forced him to his knees. Clutching a hand to his chest, he leaned<\/p>\n

\t forward. His hair fell over his face, blocking his view of her overhead<\/p>\n

\t strike. It fell across the back of his head and knocked him downward so that<\/p>\n

\t he scarcely had time to break the fall with his hands. Instinctively his leg<\/p>\n

\t lashed out and swept her feet out from under her, sending her crashing to<\/p>\n

\t the grass.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\t Charlie hit the ground with a grunt and remained there for a few seconds,<\/p>\n

\t catching her breath. Jocelyn recovered first and sprang to his feet,<\/p>\n

\t offering her his hand. She took it, her gaze fixed on his.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\t \u201cExcellent,\u201d he said. \u201cYou stunned even me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\t \u201cYou weren\u2019t expecting it.\u201d She hated the quiver in her<\/p>\n

\t voice. Her hands trembled with the surge of emotions he\u2019d aroused. Now<\/p>\n

\t that she\u2019d calmed a bit, she realized why he\u2019d been so awful.<\/p>\n

\t He\u2019d deliberately taunted her into fighting him without holding<\/p>\n

\t back.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\t \u201cNo, and I haven\u2019t underestimated anyone in a very long<\/p>\n

\t time,\u201d he admitted. \u201cNone of us are ever too old to<\/p>\n

\t learn.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\t \u201cI\u2019m sorry if I hurt you.\u201d She tried pulling her hand<\/p>\n

\t from his.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\t \u201cDon\u2019t worry about it. You needed to know you can fight us.<\/p>\n

\t Edrik is powerful, but you\u2019re not necessarily at his mercy, not as<\/p>\n

\t long as you\u2019re my apprentice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\t \u201cI couldn\u2019t ask for a better teacher.\u201d She said with<\/p>\n

\t heartfelt honesty.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\t \u201cNor I a better student.\u201d He dropped her hand, collected their<\/p>\n

\t weapons, and placed them against the wall. \u201cI think that\u2019s<\/p>\n

\t enough for tonight. You may go inside if you want. I\u2019m staying here<\/p>\n

\t for a while longer to practice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\t \u201cDo you mind if I watch?\u201d Not only did she find his athleticism<\/p>\n

\t aesthetically pleasing, but she learned from observing his technique.<\/p>\n

\t Settling herself on the wall, she stretched her arms and shoulders before<\/p>\n

\t she became so involved in him that she stared, motionless.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\t In the center of the yard, he practiced kata, a pre-planned series of<\/p>\n

\t movements resembling a powerful, graceful dance, though it was actually a<\/p>\n

\t mock fight against an imaginary opponent. She\u2019d never seen anyone<\/p>\n

\t perform with his liquid grace and subtle power born from natural talent as<\/p>\n

\t well as centuries of practice. Watching the play of muscles beneath the<\/p>\n

\t black tank top that clung to his perspiring body, she imagined how it would<\/p>\n

\t feel like to be enveloped in his sinewy arms.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\t As if sensing her thoughts, he turned to her, his dark eyes reflecting the<\/p>\n

\t torch flames, his lips parted slightly.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\t Lightning flashed in the distance. He gazed skyward just before fat<\/p>\n

\t raindrops fell through the trees. He approached, but to her surprise,<\/p>\n

\t instead of reaching for the staffs, he stepped between her legs, took her<\/p>\n

\t face in his hands and covered her mouth in a possessive kiss.<\/p>\n

\t Charlie\u2019s heart raced. Moaning softly, she closed her eyes and wrapped<\/p>\n

\t her arms around his neck and her legs around his lean waist.<\/span><\/p>\n
