Excerpt from Manticore:<\/strong><\/p>\n Oh look. A party.\u201d Manticore steps into the shop, grinning from ear-to-ear and exposing his razor-like teeth. His catlike face, enhanced by black and gray makeup, is a strange contrast to his classy black suit and pale gray tie.<\/p>\n \u201cGet him!\u201d growls a horned demon.<\/p>\n \u201cI love a warm welcome.\u201d Manticore leaps, catlike, and meets his foe in mid-air. They drop to the ground and roll before Manticore pins him and rips out his throat with his teeth. Blood splatters his face and clothes. By now he, too, looks demonic. He jumps into the fight, ripping apart the gang members while Brandy finishes off the demon she\u2019s fighting. I rush to the door, close it, and whisper what I hope are stronger protective spells.<\/p>\n \u201cWell, that was fun.\u201d Manticore grins. He glances at the front of his torn, bloody suit. \u201cThis was one of my favorites. Oh well. And how are you ladies tonight?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t know who the hell you are, but you have great timing,\u201d Brandy says.<\/p>\n \u201cAh. You must be the charming Miss Brandy.\u201d He turns his cocky grin to her. \u201cI\u2019m Manticore. It\u2019s always a pleasure to meet my employees.\u201d He offers his gore-covered hand, but Brandy won\u2019t take it.<\/p>\n Instead, she points down the little hallway behind the counter. \u201cThe restroom is that way.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cForgive me. I forget that humans are always a little squeamish regarding the hunt.\u201d He tugs a handkerchief from his pocket and wipes his hands. His gaze fixes on me, and my heartbeat quickens. His eyes are startlingly beautiful — almost like Martin\u2019s, except there\u2019s a wildness to Manticore that Martin could never have. I truly like Martin, but Manticore does things to my libido, even though I hate to admit it. He steps toward me, his smile fading slightly. \u201cThe lovely Daisy Fay. So we meet again.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cNot that I\u2019m complaining about your timing, but what are you doing here?\u201d I ask, trying to appear unaffected by his presence. Knowing him, he senses my emotions — smells my desire. Since meeting him, I\u2019ve had the most disturbing and erotic dreams about the two of us.<\/p>\n He touches the side of his nose. \u201cI smell trouble. Call it a gift.
