Character Quote: From Her Ladyship’s Ring “Why? You think he’ll waltz in here and offer me a job tracking down who really stole that necklace? That only happens in badly written movies. Once the Feds make up their collective minds that you’re one of the bad guys, there’s not a damn thing you can do to change it. Even if this asshole offered me a job, it would be so they could set me up and arrange things so I’d spend the rest of my life in prison.”
Excerpt from Her Ladyship’s Ring:
Jake made quick work of removing the metal plate from both sides and sliding the mechanism attached to the knob out of its place. He carried the whole contraption into the kitchen and put it on the counter. The he started undoing various screws to take apart the insides.
“Normally when old hardware breaks,” he said, not looking at me, “the knob turns and nothing happens. I’ve never seen one break like this.”
I’d almost forgotten Jake was an expert at locks.
“So what happened?” I asked.
He ignored my question as he concentrated on the pile of metal in front of him, removing screw after tiny screw. Suddenly the whole thing fell apart. He used the screw driver to poke the many pieces.
“Huh,” he said finally.
“Huh what?” came my witty response.
“Metal fatigue. Not what I expected. I figured someone had sabotaged the mechanism. But it looks as if this piece snapped and slipped into just the wrong spot.” He picked up a small piece of metal and showed it to me. It looked like every other piece of metal I’d ever seen.
“If you say so.” Made me feel better knowing it wasn’t a deliberate act by unknown enemies.
Jake dumped the bits and pieces into a plastic bag. “I haven’t lost my touch,” he said quietly.
But not quietly enough.

Thanks for hosting me, Kate. The more I wrote Jake, the more I liked him even if he did break my heroine’s heart. I can’t wait to find out what he does in book 3 of the series!
