Reviews and recommendations on the Compelling Beasts blog are my honest opinion. I purchase the books, comics, and movies that I recommend and review and I do not accept free copies for review.
Gallowwalkers (2012) is a slow-paced but spellbinding horror western. Reminiscent of the Spaghetti Westerns, it has creepy characters, including the solemn, rugged antihero. Aman (Wesley Snipes) has a dismal past, having known loss, sorrow and violence from his youngest days. He’s out for revenge against a villain whose only redeeming quality is his love for his son–if a man like Kansa (Kevin Howarth) can love at all. As villains go, he’s brutal but at the same time horribly fascinating. At first the storyline seems a bit confusing, but as the movie unfolds, everything makes sense.
The movie has some great secondary characters. The self-sufficient mistress of the slaughterhouse (Jenny Gago) is the kind of female character that’s great to see. The young gunslinger, Fabulos (Riley Smith), works well as Aman’s sidekick and a hypnotic-eyed outlaw Hool (Hector Hank) is an attention grabber (wish he had more screen time).
Gallowwalkers is visually appealing, even with the splashes of gore. It seamlessly combines an alternate old west with a demonic fantasy setting. The movie has zombies, but they’re the thinking kind and strangely attractive.
I’d recommend Gallowwalkers for anyone looking for something unusual. It’s slow paced, but it stays with you and calls you back for more.
