Reviews and recommendations on the Compelling Beasts blog are my honest opinion. I purchase the books, comics, and movies that I recommend and review and I do not accept free copies for review.
If you’re a fan of old black and white horror movies, you’ll probably appreciate Tales of Dracula as much as I did. It has the feel of those old movies, but also some tongue-in-cheek moments that make this a unique combination of old-fashioned horror and a feel-good movie (if you’re like me and think of classic horror movies like old friends).
Tales of Dracula focuses on three classic monsters–Dracula, the Wolf Man and the Frankenstein Monster. Dracula (Wayne W. Johnson) is charismatic and a force to be reckoned with. Creighton Reed (Tom Delillo) captures the gloomy demeanor of the original Wolf Man. The Frankenstein Monster (Joe DeMuro) has a slightly better situation in this movie than in the original story, since his new guardian, Victoria Frankenstein (Courtney Bennett), seems to care about him.
The secondary characters also bring something new to familiar roles. There is Ilona (Greta Volkova) and her father, Daniel (David Merrell), both terrorized by Dracula. The interaction between the innkeeper, Anton (Dwight Kemper), and his daughter, Elsa (Cassandra Hayes), adds some humor to the story.
I’ve watched Tales of Dracula a few times since buying it and it’s one I’ll be watching again.
