My favorite fictional antagonist is Count Dracula. When I first read the novel, I wondered how the vampire saw the events in which he was portrayed as the villain. Even at age twelve, I was fascinated by the allure of the character and enthralled by the scene where he forces Mina to drink from him. The vampire is the most versatile of traditional “monsters,” and Dracula has been re-imagined in so many different ways. One of my favorite retellings is Fred Saberhagen’s THE DRACULA TAPE, which reveals the Count as unjustly persecuted by the fanatical Van Helsing.
