Title: Rob’s Rebellion
Author: Margaret Fieland
Blurb:
Colonel Rob Walker always does his duty, even when it means risking shaky relationship with his family. When he’s ordered to bring the treaty negotiations between the Terran Federation and the Aleyni to a successful conclusion, he’s determined to do just that, even when both sides would rather he fail. How can Rob pull off a miracle and avoid a war, one where both sides could be destroyed?
Excerpt (No more than 500 words):
Rob woke the next morning at dawn, refreshed and unable to sleep any longer. Glancing at Carol and Laura’s sleeping forms, he grabbed some clothes and tip-toed from the room, showered, and dressed. He’d head for the port and grab something to eat. He’d walked perhaps half the distance when he encountered Reuben.
“Feeling better?” Reuben rested a hand on Rob’s shoulder for a moment.
“Yes.” Words bubbled up, but stopped before they managed to leave his mouth. He needed to speak, say something, or Reuben would be lost to him forever. Despair swept over him. Where would he find the courage?
“Headed for the port?” Reuben asked.
Rob nodded and fell into step beside his friend. “Let’s pick up something for first meal and find someplace to sit outside.”
“Sure.”
They collected a pot of kaff, rolls, cheese, and fruit at one of the Aleyni-run shops and settled at a table outdoors. One other table was occupied, a couple of Aleynis bent over a drawing of some kind. The sun peeked over the mountains and a cool breeze blew. Rob sipped his kaff, which was hot and reviving. Still, he dithered as words refused to form.
“Laura wanted to have an affair with me.” Reuben grabbed Rob’s wrist and turned his hand over. “You’re shaking.
Rob snatched his hand back. “You slept with Laura? When? What the blazes were you thinking? You’re supposed to be my friend.” Rob shook his head, but his whirling brain refused to settle, and the various bits of Reuben’s revelation swirled around like a twister. His hand shook and kaff slopped onto the table.
“It never got as far as intercourse. Laura couldn’t nerve herself up to it.”
“When did this transpire?” Rob gulped kaff. His mouth burned from the scalding brew.
“After you left for Aleyne, Laura came to me. She was determined to find a lover. Would you have preferred she find some stranger?” Reuben clamped his mouth shut, but the unspoken words, like Carol, hung in the air between the two of them.
“Yes. No. What the blazes difference does it make?” Rob screwed up his face to stop himself from crying. “What do I do now?”
“Yell, scream, cry, throw the blasted kaff mug at the wall. Let yourself feel something for once in your life.” Reuben rose and walked away, his purposeful strides sounding against the stones of the path.
Each step was a hammer to Rob’s heart. He held out his hands. They fluttered like leaves in a strong wind. Reuben was walking out of his life forever. “Wait.”
Reuben stopped but did not turn. “I’m through waiting, Robert. I’ve said my piece and now I’m leaving.” He started walking again.
Rob pushed himself out of his chair and stumbled toward his friend. His guts twisted as he stared at the retreating back. Remain silent and he’d be a murderer, a murderer of the emotions he’d denied for so long. “Reuben, I love you. Don’t go.
