Excerpt:
Logan took her to the hotel, walked her to the room she would share with her mother, his heart pounding. Was this it? Did he say “goodbye” to her forever?
“I can’t express my thanks to you, Logan.” Her eyes held sincerity. “Not just for saving our lives, but for staying with me. You didn’t have to, and I want you to know I appreciate it.” She smiled at him. “You’re really growing on me.”
“Does that mean I can see you again? Maybe take you out to dinner sometime?”
“I’d love that.”
Logan felt like he was falling into her. Those milk-chocolate eyes mesmerized him so completely he had no idea how he could separate from her even for a minute. He wanted to wrap her up in his arms where he knew she’d be safe. There was no way to prevent himself from kissing her. The surprising thing was that she turned her face up to his and accepted it.
From the first touch of his lips to hers, Logan wanted to devour her. Instead, he utilized every ounce of control he had to keep his touch gentle. Coaxing. For the first time, he realized he was playing for keeps. The long haul. Forever. He’d bonded with her. On some level he realized it was likely their shared trauma. The results of the posttraumatic stress. But he didn’t believe it had started there. She had haunted Logan from the first moment he’d seen her in that ER. The fire had been a coincidence. Unfortunate circumstances had thrown them together in a brutal way that had managed to solidify the bond he already felt.
Even though Logan wanted to deepen the kiss, to take her into a sensual world with him where they could lose themselves in each other, he knew better. Not now. Not until she’d had time to process everything. Hell, he needed time. Even though Logan knew his feelings weren’t going to change, he had no way of knowing how she felt about it.
“Logan?” Gwinn clung to his shirt, looking up at him with questioning eyes when he ended the kiss. Clearly, she was willing to go where he led.
“I know, baby,” he said, his voice sounding hoarse. He rested his forehead against hers. “Not now. But soon.” With reluctance, he separated from Guinn so he could give her his phone number. Took hers as well, looking straight into her eyes until she stared wide-eyed into his. “I’ll call you. If you need me, if you just want to talk about anything. Call me. Do you understand? I don’t care the time of day or night. Call me.”
“I will.” She sounded small. Forlorn. Leaving her was the hardest thing Logan had ever done. But he gave her one last hard kiss and left her, because he truly believed it was the best thing for her. She had to decide if she wanted to give them a shot. Once she’d had time away from him, she might see it as merely an infatuation stemming from the near-death experience. If that were the case, Logan would just have to learn to live with it.
