Interview with C.M. Estopare

Tell us about your most recent book.

Winterskin is a dark fantasy epic inspired by Vikings, Norse mythology, a little dash of my own dark imagination. It is the coming of age story of a simple young woman thrust into a world that would like nothing more than for her to its puppet. Sadly, she isn’t so easily broken.

Who is the villain or antagonist in your story and what is he/she like?

The antagonist in Winterskin is the magic of the world itself. It is deteriorating and becoming a bit more demanding of the sorceresses that command it. The magic, called the Power, can be likened to the IRS. It only wants to help, but it has become too large and simply steps on people.

Is one of your main characters a supernatural creature that is traditionally considered “evil?” If yes, how does this character break that traditional stereotype?

Without giving too much away, one of my main characters is a vampire, called a hetaera in Winterskin. Hetaera are normally women that suck the lifeforce from men (who are often willing). While hetaera are considered evil creatures, this certain hetaera has played as a peacemaker between the north and the south. She is a centuries old councilor that has been able to hide her true nature, but not outright banish it.

What kind of antagonist is your favorite?

The antagonist that leads the protagonist from the sidelines, throwing breadcrumb trails so that the protagonist may follow and grow based on how the antagonist has led them. This antagonist may start off as seemingly helpful, but all of these trails eventually become stale and when the protagonist realizes the antagonist has led them into a hole–it’ll be entirely too late.

What is one of your favorite paranormal creatures and why?

My favorite paranormal creature has to be the cockatrice. With its “death eye” it’s able to turn absolutely anything (excluding the weasel) into stone. It’s basically a gigantic flying chicken-dragon! I love the cockatrice because of its ability of petrification–being turned into stone sounds absolutely terrifying!
