Reviews and recommendations on the Compelling Beasts blog are my honest opinion. I purchase the books, comics, and movies that I recommend and review and I do not accept free copies for review.
The best villains are usually the ones who don’t do evil for the sake of it. They have good reasons for their actions and though they’re generally doing the wrong thing, part of you is rooting for them.
That’s how Erik Killlmonger in the Black Panther movie makes you feel. He has good reasons for being angry and wanting revenge. The problem is, he’ll stop at nothing to satisfy his need for vengeance. Because of his past, he’s learned to be self-sufficient. He has the potential to rise from a strong character to a powerful one, but ultimately it’s his lack of emotional flexibility that defeats him.
I didn’t like how his story ended, but I got why it had to be. He crossed the line from antihero to villain, but he had admirable qualities that made him an amazing character. It would have been great to eventually see him use his skills to work alongside his rival, T’Challa. In movies based on comic books it’s not unusual for characters to return from the dead, so there’s always hope that Killmonger might be back.
