Reviews and recommendations on the Compelling Beasts blog are my honest opinion. I purchase the books, comics, and movies that I recommend and review and I do not accept free copies for review.
I waited much longer than I’d intended to watch Alleluia! The Devil’s Carnival and I’m sorry I didn’t watch it sooner. As a fan of the first Devils’ Carnival, I looked forward to this sequel. Sometimes sequels aren’t easy, especially when the first movie is so well done, but I enjoyed Alleluia! as much as the first, and some parts I liked even better.
My favorite thing about the movie is that in many ways heaven is as bad and sometimes worse than hell. Heaven is inflexible. Its punishments are cruel. Worst of all, there seems to be none of the forgiveness that is traditionally heaven’s trademark.
I liked the creepy style and the variety of unusual characters. The bittersweet story of the Painted Doll was the main focus of the movie. The devil and his minions were more antiheroes than villains.
I hope there is a third Devil’s Carnival because Alleluia! ended at a point that left me wondering what happens next. I would definitely watch a third installment.
If you haven’t watched Alleluia! I highly recommend it, especially if you liked the first movie. If you haven’t seen either one, give them a try.
