No Mere Mortal – Decagon 1
By Amara Dey
Evil has two faces, beautiful and monstrous.
Ansa of Radiance, Decagon, embodies both sides of this coin. She is one of three antagonists in this novel. A wind goddess and powerful witch, she finds out a terrible family secret, loses her sense of belonging, and embraces her dark side.
Ansa has many qualities. She is a gorgeous, powerful, and intelligent woman who reaches the pinnacle of her career as one of Radiance’s elite protectors known as Powers. But once she learns she has an inner monster, she ditches the good and follows the path of the beast. And those positive attributes suddenly become dangerous weapons in the hands of an evildoer.
While maintaining the façade of ‘protector of her realm’ she deceives her nation, spies for the enemy, plots to destroy her realm, facilitates an invasion, murders young women and drains their blood for her magic spells, sends her henchman to kill the heroine (the glow bearer), and attempts the deed herself.
Ansa’s creature emerges towards the end of the novel, and it is an unsightly, brutal, killing machine that does what we expected of it.
So hideous or beautiful? Which side of Ansa is more evil? Well, I wouldn’t like to come up against either, but beauty in this case is definitely the more fascinating of the two beasts.

An Excerpt
…The sorceress had joined them.
Well, who’d refuse the job of Supreme Ruler of a magical world, with the added perk of super-strong magic? Besides, this crusade gives me back my real identity.
She [Ansa] lived a lie because of a massive web of deceit, spun around her and her sisters, from birth. The master’s cause gave her the opportunity to become her true self, the one more like her biological mother—a vicious killer.
While she kept the master updated on Radiance’s defense plans, she and Hena had completed the lights-out spell. Next, with a borrowed phenomenon from Earth, she perfected her version of sun-block. They were ready to devastate Radiance when the seer divined the new glow bearer. Her Factor Fifty couldn’t protect against such a powerful UV ray. No invocation switched off the glow, only the death of the bearer, and she had tasked Zaru with the girl’s elimination. But Zaru wasted time, and her rash friends stopped viewing the glow as a problem. Moonshade’s leader believed himself invincible. With the Ancient feeling too guilty over the agony Moonfolk endured to arbitrate against them again, the old man was cornered.
Come sundown, the master disclosed, he’d activate a magnetic field to trap the Ancient inside the Horseshoe Caves, and prevent him from intervening.
The sorceress experienced a sudden lightness. The human wasn’t stronger than them. She need not kill the girl and risk discovery. But seconds later she clenched her jaw. An unextinguished glow made her edgy and won over her fear of being caught.
“You will die today, Glow Bearer,” she said aloud. “But I won’t waste your blood.”
Those words repeatedly echoed around the cavern, agreeing with her decision. The witch tossed her auburn mane, picked up her favorite knife, sheathed it, and pocketed a few vials to fill. Her travel cyclone deposited her inside the girl’s unlit apartment. Perfect. She glided through the empty living quarters, along a short corridor, and pointed at a closed door. It opened, and she saw the girl asleep under the bedcovers. The sorceress drew the dagger and approached the bed…
