Megan stopped and turned. She thought she\u2019d have to look down at Seth because he was a couple of steps behind her but he was so tall his face was near level with hers.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d he asked, frowning.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow did you find me?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI just did.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s not an answer.\u201d She gripped the banister on her right. \u201cThat evil man, vampire, was just about to attack me, bite me and then he was gone. The next thing I knew you were there. How did you know?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI just did.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAgain not an answer.\u201d She frowned. \u201cCome on, I need more. This is turning into a night that I\u2019m struggling to get my head around.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay.\u201d He nodded. \u201cI\u2019ve been keeping an eye on him, Samuel Bennington, which, by the way, is one of the many names he goes by.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy? Why have you been keeping an eye on him?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe organization gave word to the Dublin group\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWho is the organization?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe GVW.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhich stands for?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGlobal Vampire Watch.\u201d<\/p>\n

She nodded. Fuck, was there really such a thing or was Seth making this shit up? \u201cAnd who is the Dublin group?\u201d She\u2019d see if he could explain that one while he was at it.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are five of us, not including Rose.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay, and what do you do?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we\u2019re alerted that vampires have breached our territory, we search for them, hunt them down.\u201d He reached out and touched her neck, at the exact spot Samuel had earlier. \u201cWe make sure they don\u2019t do harm to humans in our area and, if we can, we drive a stake through their heart.\u201d<\/p>\n

She trembled under his touch. The passion in his eyes, the steely determination in his voice\u2014damn, he made her believe him. \u201cHave you ever\u2026you know?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cStabbed a vampire in the heart.\u201d<\/p>\n

He tipped his chin. \u201cYes. Once.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWho was he?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot he, it was a she.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd a vicious bitch, too. She\u2019d left a trail of bodies across Europe before landing on our shores. Biggest mistake of her very long life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Megan could imagine Seth\u2019s big muscles, his strong body, being able to fight a vampire. It would still take a lot of effort, she was sure, since legends told of their super-human strength.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow come on. You need to rest,\u201d he said. \u201cWhat you\u2019ve been through was horrible.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSeth? Seth is that you?\u201d A female voice, also Irish, came from the top of the stairs.<\/p>\n

Megan turned and climbed them. Once at the top, they stepped out into a large room that appeared to be a kitchen-dining area and living space.<\/p>\n

A woman, short and round, wearing a brown dress with a strange orange zigzag pattern, stood at a stove. She was stirring something that steamed wildly. When she turned her glasses were misty.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh damn,\u201d the woman said, dropping her spectacles to hang over her ample bosom. \u201cI\u2019m always doing that.\u201d She set the spoon aside, walked up to Megan, and then took her hands.<\/p>\n
