\u201cYou\u2019re what?\u201d She shook her head in disbelief, certain she must have misheard him.<\/p>\n

But he looked as shocked as she felt. She got the feeling he hadn\u2019t meant to say what he had. Then he shook his head and met her gaze. \u201cI\u2019m a drakon. The son of a dragon and a human female.\u201d<\/p>\n

Could her day get any worse? Yes, yes, it could, because Darius obviously believed what he was saying. She was trapped in a luxury penthouse apartment with a man who thought he was part dragon and part human.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd how did this happen, if dragons haven\u2019t existed on the earth for more than four thousand years?\u201d Time to inject a little reason into the conversation. He couldn\u2019t be totally crazy, not if he\u2019d built a business empire. Or, at least, that\u2019s what she was banking on.<\/p>\n

Maybe he\u2019d played too many of those fantasy role-playing games as a teenager. Maybe he\u2019d never stopped.<\/p>\n

He raked his fingers through his thick black hair. \u201cI\u2019m just a little over four thousand years old, Sarah.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t look a day over two thousand,\u201d she quipped. When he didn\u2019t laugh at her joke, she hopped off the stool and backed away from him. He sighed and came around the counter. She held out her hands to ward him off. Not that it would do much good considering how much larger he was than her. \u201cStay back.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t mean to frighten you.\u201d He did seem sorry, but that didn\u2019t change the situation.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd you didn\u2019t think telling me that you\u2019re a drakon and you\u2019ve been around for thousands of years would freak me out?\u201d Because she was honestly finding it hard to breathe. Her chest tightened and her throat constricted.<\/p>\n

\u201cCalm down, Sarah. No one is going to hurt you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I\u2019m supposed to take your word for that?\u201d The fierce expression on his face made her wish she\u2019d kept her mouth shut. He\u2019d been concerned before. Now he was angry.<\/p>\n

She took another step back and stumbled. Darius lunged forward and caught her before her butt hit the floor. He pulled her tightly against him, with his arms banded around her.<\/p>\n

God, he smelled good. She\u2019d noticed earlier, when she\u2019d cried all over him, but had been too upset to enjoy it. It was a combination of man and a woodsy scent that was both stimulating and relaxing at the same time.<\/p>\n

She was attracted to a crazy man. It had been that kind of a day. \u201cYou can let me go now,\u201d she told him.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d He scooped her into his arms. \u201cNo, I really can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n
