Sebastian stalked his quarry through the night forest with deliberate care. He angled his flight to lengthen his glide, careful to keep his prey\u2019s preternatural hearing from alerting them to his closeness with the sound of his beating wings. A clarifying thought enhanced his vision, and he swooped lower over the top of the forest. The red and yellow heat waves of the two\u00a0werebeasts<\/em>\u00a0made them easy to pick out from the cooler colors of the plants and trees the pair thought would camouflage their movements. Their ignorance of the abilities of his kind was a chief advantage for him. Outright fear was another. While the apprehension discouraged most challenges and made his job easier, he didn\u2019t enjoy being made out to be a boogie monster to make youngsters behave. He did, however, derive great satisfaction in being a griffin.<\/p>\n

The hunter in him relished the temporary freedom the chase allowed. The heady taste of the pursuit sped his pulse and sent enriched blood coursing through his body to sharpen his senses. He could hear the two heartbeats\u2014clear, distinct, thudding wildly from their flight, their last bid for freedom.<\/p>\n

He savored the flavors of the forest\u2019s nighttime scents. Beneath the normal fragrant odors of nature, he detected the stink of their fear, their panic. Made that much sweeter with the knowledge he was so much closer than they knew. Deer, squirrels and other natural animals darted away before the fleeing monsters, raced in terror from the creature that pursued them.<\/p>\n

Sebastian pushed aside his satisfaction. They\u00a0<\/em>were heading in the only direction he had left open for them. The man in him couldn\u2019t help but feel a twinge of sorrow for what he was about to do. He preferred to deliver judgments with calm, cool detachment. It was important that he not allow any emotion to influence him in these matters lest it interfere with the strict adherence to the laws he was sworn to uphold and enforce. He was not a murderer. He kept himself detached from his assignments\u2014kept the beast within him in check. It was what set him apart from the ones he hunted.<\/p>\n

These were all that remained of a savage group he had tracked from one bloodbath to the next for the last year. Their insidious crimes made them dangerous for both of their subspecies,\u00a0wereanimals<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0werebeasts<\/em>\u00a0alike. Their crimes revolted Sebastian; and in a lifetime spanning more than five hundred years and witnessing most every atrocity, that wasn\u2019t easy to do.<\/p>\n
