Where are you from?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I was born just outside Philadelphia, but that was a long time ago. My parents died when I was a teenager, and I’ve spent most of my life traveling the country from coast to coast, learning from countless sorcerers and growing in power.<\/p>\n

What is your main purpose in life?<\/strong><\/p>\n

You clearly haven’t been to one of my many rallies. My goal is simple: Unification of all American sorcerers under a single government and rule of law. At the moment, there are places in this country where sorcerers live above the law in a state of anarchy, and the strong prey mercilessly upon the weak. My own wife, God rest her soul, fell victim to slave traders and magic thieves.<\/p>\n

Who is your greatest enemy and why?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Evan Blackwood, and I’m afraid that’s partly my fault. I made a deal that I hoped would gain me some powerful support. In the end, I lost that support and Evan, who is one of the strongest sorcerers in the country \u2013 maybe the world. Well, that kind of unchecked power was always a threat, so you can see why I would make the deal. If I could have neutralized him, I would have had control over all that magic and could have used it to do so much good!<\/p>\n

Do you think you can ever reconcile with this enemy?<\/strong><\/p>\n

No. But I don’t need to. I’ve got something better in mind.<\/p>\n

Do you have a love interest?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I haven’t loved a woman since my wife died, although I’ve considered marrying for political advantage.<\/p>\n

What is your weapon of choice?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mind magic.<\/p>\n

What makes you happy?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Using the vast power I’ve gained to help those in need.<\/p>\n

Do you have a code of honor?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Of course I do! What kind of question is that? Do I look like I have two horns and a spiked tail? I’ve changed this world for the better, no matter what a small handful of dissenters might have told you. As for the crimes they accuse me of, ask them if they have any proof! They don’t.<\/p>\n

What makes you angry?<\/strong><\/p>\n

People questioning my honor.<\/p>\n

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Nothing.<\/p>\n

I can be very charming when I want to be.<\/p>\n

\u201cSilence,\u201d David commanded.<\/p>\n

Her throat continued to work, but no sound emerged. She felt like a fish being gutted, choking and spluttering as David returned to the work of cutting into the soft, sensitive flesh of her belly. Yet even as tears refilled her eyes and fear devoured her heart, some part of her recognized that her guts remained intact. Whatever David was doing to her with the dagger involved tracing shallow patterns across the surface of her skin.<\/p>\n

Fight the pain. Take deep breaths. Ground and center. She was not in the empty living room of a house she had not quite moved into yet, she was at church, singing in the choir. Above her, Jesus hung from a cross, a crown of thorns atop his head, a soft glow surrounding him. She usually found the magic within that glow. She reached for it…<\/p>\n

\u201cStop that!\u201d David slapped her hard across the face.<\/p>\n

Once again her eyes flew open. She saw the dagger dripping with blood \u2013 her blood. Had her feeble grab for magic actually made a difference? David seemed to have noticed something, but what?<\/p>\n

\u201cYou’re just making this harder on yourself,\u201d David said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you want?\u201d Madison tried to ask. Her mouth moved, her lips forming the question, but no sound emerged.<\/p>\n

She didn’t think he would answer; he couldn’t even have heard the question, but to her surprise he only hesitated a moment before saying, \u201cYour soul.\u201d<\/p>\n
