The following excerpt from Through My Heart continues where last week left off. Adrian has just made Anna a vampire and she’s getting used to her new life.
It’s hard to believe we’re 8 days into October already! If you have a moment, stop by my Halloween Page. It’s running all month long.
Excerpt from Through My Heart
“Adrian. Call me Adrian.”
“Adrian, there’s so much I don’t understand. How did we turn to smoke? How did you make me like you? Will I never be able to look at the sun again?”
Resting his hands on my shoulders, he held my gaze. “I’ll answer your questions soon. First, I must see to the crew and make sure we leave this place. Something isn’t right here.”
And a bit more, if you’d like to continue:
A shiver ran through me. “I know. I, too, sense it somehow.”
“Your senses are heightened now
. You’ll see, hear, smell, and feel things differently than you did as a mortal. Some things will be stronger, and others far less potent. This life can be beautiful for someone like you, Anna. For now, rest. It’s better for us to sleep by day. I’ll be back soon.”
He covered my mouth in a gentle kiss.

Adrian – I am a vampire whose physical ugliness intensified with my immortality. For centuries I hunted alone, disguising myself from prey, preferring illusions to brutal attacks. Others of my kind spurned me. Some tried to destroy me, and on them I unleashed my wrath. I suffered the agony of eternal loneliness, and then I met Anna.
Anna – My life was almost unbearable until a tall, black-haired stranger with fiery eyes and needle sharp teeth drank my blood and swept me into an unimaginable world. From the night we met, I gave Adrian my heart, but a lie spun by a jealous enemy drove us apart. I swore I would never give him the chance to hurt me again, but denying my love for him was harder than I thought.
Note: Through My Heart is a very short horror romance with a spicy heat level, violence, and a HEA.

Closing in on 30 years ago, an ex-boyfriend asked me why I liked writing about vampires so much. I told him I didn’t know, I just did. Really, does one need another reason for enjoying something they write about?
After reading this passage, I think I finally understand the appeal vampires held (and to a degree, still hold) for me. I know I’ll never be normal, and I’ve been greatly distressed by that fact. But from my current vantage point (closing in on 60 years old) I can see there are things I have been able to know and experience that I wouldn’t have known if I were pretty or had a normal brain.
I can really relate to everything you just said, C.L.! There can be beauty in the monsters and monsters in the pretties sometimes. 🙂
