Excerpt:
“What do you do for a living, Kai? Do you stay out here all year round?”
“Most of the time. I’m a nature photographer, and I’ve been lucky enough to be pretty successful at it. I get to spend a lot of time traveling, cruising the ocean. I’m as much at home in the sea as on land. You probably feel the same way.”
“I do, but I have a special skill set for that.”
“True.”
“You love the sea so much because of the summers with your uncle?” I venture.
“My whole family has ties to the ocean. My mom is from Hawaii and my Dad is from Greece. I grew up in Hawaii. Most of my family still lives there. I love to travel, but I miss them. No matter how far you go, there’s nothing like family bonds.”
I place my sandwich aside and gaze at the fire. His words hit me hard.
“You okay?” he asks.
Nodding, I turn back to him. “Yeah. You’re right. Family is important. I probably shouldn’t have left mine the way I did. I mean, I’m right to go, but I should have talked things out first so they’d understand.”
“It’s not too late.” He reaches out and brushes a strand of hair from my eyes. His fingertip grazes my cheek. My skin tingles where he touches me. “If you want to talk about it—”
“No.” I shake my head. “You’ve already helped me enough. I don’t need to dump my emotional baggage on you, too.”
“Sometimes it’s easier to talk to someone outside your situation.”

I feel for her. Her pain is more than evident.
I can’t tell — at this point does Kai know Ivy is a selkie?
