EXCERPT
The sun was beginning to rise, producing tints of orange and pink in the sky. Draco stood watch while it all unfolded. It was a beautiful sight, fascinating, and he wished he could watch it with Missy. He’d never felt a need so great before and wasn’t quite sure what to do about it. Everything about her pulled at him in a way he’d never experience before. Sure, he’d had women, but they meant nothing more to him than to satisfy a sexual urge. The moment they’d left his bed, they’d left his mind. And he certainly never wanted to kiss any one of them. Yet with Missy, her lips beckoned to him and the instant he’d touched them with his own he’d felt an explosion of desire fill him. Not entirely sexual, he mused, but something more. Something deeper.
Her comment hurt him, another thing he wasn’t used to. He was a confident man and held no care for what others thought of him for the most part. He was stronger than any mere human, after all. Still, hearing Missy say she felt like vomiting at the sight of him hurt.
He heard Hunter enter, but didn’t turn to greet him.
“Sir, can I get you anything?”
“I’ve finally found her, Hunter.”
“Oh, that’s wonderful, sir! Who might she be?”
“Missy.” It was all supposed to be so easy. He would perform the incantation to bring forth his mate, take her into his life, teach her the ways of being a demon, and live the rest of his days with her as his woman. Now, he worried none of his plan would come to fruition. Missy had been so cold, so distant.
“Well, isn’t that a pleasant surprise.”
“She saw me kill that young woman a few days ago. Jennifer.”
“I see.”
Draco picked at the imaginary lint on his slacks. “She was repulsed.”
“Well, sir, it is hard for the average person to grasp.”

“Well, sir, it is hard for the average person to grasp.” Draco lifted his eyes to Hunter. “You manage.”
Hunter shrugged his shoulders. “I’ve been with you for decades. She’s never experienced such a thing before.”
“The first time, were you repulsed?” He suddenly wanted to know, not knowing why now it seemed so important.
Hunter paused. “I was shocked.” I was repulsed.
Draco sighed. When would he ever learn? “You were disgusted, Hunter, just admit it. You tend to forget I can read your thoughts.”
Hunter bowed his head. “Yes, sir.”
“Was that a yes to the disgust, or yes to your forgetting I can read minds?”
“Yes, sir.”
Draco let out a chuckle that had Hunter’s eyes coming up. “Okay, we will leave it at that.” He rose and walked to the window. It was difficult for him to understand the workings of the human mind. What repulsed one didn’t always repulse another.
“Give her time, sir. She will come around.” Hunter turned and walked, stiff as ever, to the door. “I did,” he said as he left.
Draco smiled as he watched Hunter through the window. Yes, Hunter had come around, quite nicely, and he really should treat him better. The man was incredibly loyal, so he wasn’t always the most intelligent, but he was faithful. And he’d been with Draco through many years of ups and downs. He was the closest thing to a friend Draco had. Letting out a sigh, Draco watched the day come to light.
When he saw her outside his window, his body came alive.
