Excerpt:
“What do you mean they’ve run away again?” Maxwell Barnes demanded, glaring at the bulldog-faced woman who ran a children’s home in London not far from where he had grown up.
Mere days ago, he had rescued two young children from being struck by a runaway hansom not far from his townhouse. The brother and sister, Jane and Sam, had been taken back to the orphanage from which they’d fled. Max had come to see how they fared only to be told that they were gone again.
“Are you so completely incompetent that the children keep going missing?”
She stared at him coolly. “We have many children here, Mr. Barnes. Most are grateful for a meal and a place to live. We can’t neglect the needs of others to coddle two ungrateful troublemakers. We’ll do our best to find them, but—”
“Not good enough.” Max glared. “I’ll look for them myself.”
He turned abruptly and stomped out of the cold, dilapidated stone building. He approached his friend and business associate, Bo Lin, an attractive Chinese man of average height and sinewy build. Like Max, he wore a dark suit with a crisp white shirt. His long black hair was bound at his nape.
“What’s wrong, Maxwell?” Bo asked in slightly accented English. “Would they not allow you to see the children?”
“The children are missing again. I’m going to look for them.”
“I’ll help.”
“We’ll speak to our underground connections as well. They’ll have a better chance of finding two orphans alone on the streets. I hope they’re not hurt or worse, Bo.”
“They seem determined to be on their own. I’m sure they’re fine, but we should find them as quickly as possible.”
“My feeling exactly.”
The men strode off.
Glancing around the bustling city, Max considered how he had always loved London—its vitality, its beautiful buildings and even its shady back alleys. He thrived on the danger and opportunities in the city. Not until this moment had he ever truly feared it. The thought of Sam and Jane out there, alone and unprotected, terrified him in a way he had never felt before.
“We have to find them, Bo,” he murmured. “We have to.”

The fact that he cares about these children speaks volumes about his character. I like him already. 🙂
