Excerpt:
Grace remained standing there for a long moment, allowing her heart to slow. She was about to return to her room when she noticed his bowl of ice on the table. He had forgotten it.
She picked up the bowl, walked to his room, and paused outside the half-open door to peer in. Max was nowhere to be seen, so she guessed he was in the adjoining bathroom. She could deliver the bowl and then disappear before he realized she had entered.
Grace slipped into the room and placed the bowl on the night table. The floor creaked when she turned to leave.
“Andrews, is that you? I forgot my ice in the hall. Will you bring it here, please?”
Grace’s heartbeat quickened again. She should leave directly. How could she, playing the part of a respectable lady, enter his bath, even under the pretense of bringing him ice for an injury?
Though she could resist, she didn’t want to. Perhaps seducing Maxwell Barnes wasn’t such a terrible idea after all. She had spent most of her life luring men in order to serve her country. Why shouldn’t she use her wiles to satisfy herself for once?
Grace picked up the bowl again and crossed the room. She stepped into the bathroom where Max lounged in a tub of water, his sinewy arms resting on the sides and his head tilted back. His sleek torso glistened with moisture. Sparse, dark hair dusted his chest and shadowed his under arms. Her admiration of his fit body was tainted only by concern about the dark bruise on his ribs.
She cleared her throat and said, “Your ice.”
Max’s eyes flew open. He grinned. “This is much better than Andrews.”
“Those ribs should be looked at by a doctor.”
“It’s just a bruise.” He gazed at her seductively. “Will you bring me the ice or shall I stand up and get it?”
Grace approached and paused over the tub. Her gaze traveled down his naked body, visible beneath the clear water.
“I know you’re the governess, but at the moment I could use the ministrations of a beautiful nurse.”
Grace smiled sweetly before dumping the entire bowl of ice—now mostly ice water—over his head.
