Some characters in books are nothing at all like their authors. For me, many of my characters are completely separate people and I usually feel like they’re telling me their story and letting me know who they are. I don’t always agree with what they say and do, but I understand their motivations. On the other hand, some characters are like me. Sometimes they reflect a part of me I like and sometimes they reflect a part I don’t.
In Back to Haunt you, the relationship between Morgan and her daughter Uma was similar in many ways to my relationship with my mother growing up. We had our share of disagreements, but I could always count on her. She knew how to be a friend as well as a mother. Like Morgan, she valued individuality. Using that influence to create Morgan and Uma’s mother/daughter relationship made me appreciate my mother even more.
Writers, do certain characters reflect a part of you? Readers, do you sometimes identify with a particular character and does this make you enjoy the book more or less?
