Hello! Today’s guest, Rebekah R. Ganiere, has the Halloween Thursday Thirteen for this week. She’s sharing her thirteen favorite Halloween decorations. One more day until Halloween!
My Thirteen Favorite Halloween Decorations!
So, my logo as a writer is Vampires & Werewolves & Zombies, so it’s no wonder that I love Halloween! And though I am an AVID Halloween fan, I don’t go for gory stuff. That’s not my thing. I love spooky, fun, creepy and sparkly. Yes, sparkly, it’s kind of weird! I’m not usually a sparkly gal.
Anyway, here are my top 13 decorations for Halloween!
13. Pumpkins. My husband is amazing at carving pumpkins and my kids love it so we always do great ones. I myself like pumpkins I don’t have carve. So I’ve collected a few that are sparkly, different colors or metal to use to decorate.
12. Spiders. Now in actuality I hate spiders. Loathe spiders and am all around creeped out by them. But at Halloween I like to put out big ones, furry ones and creepy ones. I have a giant three foot one with a spider web I put outside on a bush. There is a house we trick or treat at where the lady covers the entire inside with spiders. She has over three thousand different spider inside. It was the scariest thing I’ve ever seen.
11. Spider Webbing. Along the same lines as the spiders, webbing freaks me out. Especially when I walk into it! But I saw the Coolest house around the corner a couple years back where they did the ENITRE front of their house and lawn as one giant spider web. They webbed everything. It was amazing!
10. Rats. Rats are gross. They are nasty and have sharp teeth, so of course I decorate with them. We have big ones and I set them out on the mantle and window sills. My daughter put on in the guest bathroom by the toilet and freaked several people out. It was fun.
9. Posters and Signs. I used to be a graphic designer by trade so I made several old looking posters that I used to sell. One was for Sweeney Todd, Mrs. Lovett’s meat pies. Another was a welcome sign to Salem Mass. I love putting them up at Halloween. This year I’m thinking of making a few more. But out side I put signs about Witch broom parking and Zombie contamination zone, and things like that.
8. Big Blow up things. I have no clue what they are called! I call them, big blow up decorations. I love them. I think they are so fun. Hubby says, no way they take up too much room in his garage! So I don’t have any. But I saw a headless horseman drawn carriage that I was dying to get and a giant spider that was so cool. Alas, they will not be at my house anytime soon 🙁
7. Witch accoutrements. I just bought a Giant cauldron this year. I am super excited. I’ve wanted one for a while and so this year I decided to spend my Halloween decoration budget on a cauldron and stuff to go in it. Aside from the jars and bottles I have this cauldron and a broom and other items to go with it and in it. It is going to sit outside my front door. I can’t wait.
6. Skulls and bones. I like skulls. I have skulls on my headbands. And skulls on my shoes. I have skull jewelry, shirts, water bottle and even on my phone. I’m not sure why I’ve always loved skulls but I have. I have a couple really large ones that I display with my bottles and jars. And tiny ones I put in jars. My kids like the one my mom gave me with the light up eyes, but I like the more realistic ones.
5. Bats. Bats, bats, bats! If you walk by my house you will find bats handing from the trees. Which is ironic because where I live has one of the highest bat populations in California and you can actually see them flying at night. But I like bats. Have you ever seen one close up? So cute. That nose gets me every time!
4. Zombies. I like zombies. I do. My book Dead Awakenings is a zombie romance. I’ve watched the walking dead. I have a zombie apocalypse Pinterest page even! So one of my favorite decorations is the zombie hands I bought to go in the ground and reach out of my graves. I’m not a fan of super scary stuff so I don’t do masks for zombies. I don’t want to scare kids, or myself. But I think the hands are fun and playful.
3. Grave Stones. I think there is nothing scarier than a cemetery at night. I have a short story I wrote about a Reaper in a cemetery on Halloween Night. It was fun! But in my front yard, I do a grave yard. I used to have the best plaster headstones, but someone stole them, not cool. So I had to get new ones and now they are all foam, which makes me sad. Last year it was so windy it blew all my headstones away and I had to chase them down the street.
2. Ghosts. So I don’t really believe in ghosts. Spirits that haven’t moved on, yes. But not ghosts per say. So I found a cool way to make ghosts with a foam head and cheese cloth and I can’t wait to hang them outside this year! It’s going to go great in the graveyard!
1. Jar and bottles. This is my most favoritest decoration and I have them out year round. Like I said, I used to be a graphic designer. I guess I still am because I do all my Fairelle cover art. But I have made dozens of potion and jar labels and gotten jars and put stuff in them. Everything from Unicorn Horn Dust, to Dried Fairy Skulls. I love them and the kids that come to my house think they are so cool and creepy.

The hero or heroine in your latest book is asked to decorate for a Halloween party. What does he/she use?
Blood. Vampires love blood. But honestly probably candles and candelabras. A glass fountain with flowing wine. Large vases or deep crimson roses. It would all be very elegant.
What is your favorite Halloween or autumn decoration?
I love anything with Skulls or fun signs with sayings on them to put in my yard. I also love doing a graveyard.

This book is right up my alley. I look forward in reading it.
Great list of decorations. Rats are not my favorite. Thanks also for the great excerpt.
