Excerpt of the Week: Mountain Men (From the Inked Box set) by Kate Hill
A fierce, handsome man sat astride the dark-as-midnight steed. Tattoos covered his smooth-shaven head. A golden goatee contrasted with his tanned, weathered skin. His glittering gray eyes narrowed to slits as he studied Lydia. He wore a black leather vest and matching pants. The outfit showed off his long, lean body to his advantage. He carried a sheathed sword on his back and had a dagger strapped to his boot.
Pushing herself to her feet, she asked warily, “Jay?”
A sinister smile graced his lips. “Lydia.” He bowed his head, the polite gesture at odds with his menacing tone.
“We need to talk,” she continued, refusing to show exactly how much he intimidated her.
“Indeed we do.”
Before she had a chance to respond, he kicked the horse forward, reached down and lifted her onto the front of his mount.
He urged the horse to a gallop and Lydia clung to the animal’s sleek neck, not caring that she got a face full of mane. She’d never been on a horse in her life, but Jay didn’t seem to notice.
At least he kept a snug hold on her and despite her desire to kick the man’s ass, she prayed he wouldn’t let go — at least until the horse slowed.
A short time later, they reached the clearing where the dark castle stood. Gargoyles in the shape of giant bats rimmed the towers and a great stone snake wrapped around the base of the castle.
He guided the horse through the open double doors, directly into the great hall. It was empty except for a long wooden table lined with benches and a black leather couch facing the enormous hearth. A fire blazed in it and two huge wolves lay on a nearby rug, firelight dancing on their black bodies.
Jay dismounted and tugged Lydia off the horse. Still a bit shaky from the ride, it took her a moment to recoup. She leaned against him without fully realizing what she was doing. He motioned with his hand and the horse trotted outside.
“Are you all right?” he asked, his voice low yet husky.
“No, I’m not all right!” She shoved him hard in the chest but only succeeded in pushing herself backward.
Damn, he was lean but hard as steel. She tilted her gaze toward his face. Now that she was close enough to really see him, she noted the high ridges of his cheekbones, his well-drawn lips and the lines on his weathered skin that only enhanced his ruggedly handsome looks.
“Your damn bats almost killed us. Then you shove me on the front of your horse with the saddle horn practically up my ass –”
“That wasn’t the saddle horn,” he said, a wicked grin flirting with his lips.
