What is one of your favorite things about writing?
My favorite thing about writing is that it is an adventure. Instead of plotting a story, I come from a pantser point of view. So I tap into my characters’ world and hang on for dear life! LOL
Actually, I try to bring out their world as best as I can into the story and hope that by the end of the story that I’ve delivered what they wanted me to deliver in the best way possible.
What especially touches me about the writing process is how the characters change from the beginning of the story to the end of the story. That’s what works with fiction—I get to see their transformation more quickly than it often happens in real life. That keeps me motivated to complete the story—to get the characters where they want to be. That’s the adventure I’m talking about—being on the roller coaster ride.
What do you like about writing series books?
What I like about writing a series of books is that I get to connect with the same characters again, as if I were visiting after a length of time. I get to see how they grow and they become happier.
With Prison Break (2013), my first published short novella, I was anxious to get the story done so that I could get to the main story, Awake (publishing date TBA). When I completed Prison Break, I never thought I’d write about the same characters again. I had been so glad to kiss them goodbye, being that it was my first published work for the world to see. I was more than happy to part with the nerve-wracking learning curve to getting the story out there.
So when the characters came knocking on my door again and demanded a follow-up to their story, Prison Bait (2014), I found that the time I had between their first story and what became their second story gave me the fresh energy and perspective I needed to make their story a three-part series.
Because the male protagonist did originally want kids in the first story and the second story paved the way for that to happen, the third story in the series will bring conception and family life into the picture. 🙂
Would you tell us about your latest release?
My latest release is Prison Bait, which was nominated for a Best BDSM Romance Book of the Year [2015] award. I was quite pleasantly shocked to receive the news, especially when I checked out the other nominees. To see my name amongst all these other authors—Joey W Hill, Sierra Cartwright, Carrie Ann Ward, to name a few—whom I highly respected (and still do) was a head trip.
I’m not sure what made Prison Bait make the list. The book is a story that follows up with the characters that first showed up in Prison Break. These characters had felt trapped as if they were at a standstill with their marriage. With a bit of kink came new territory, deepening trust, more honesty and experimentation. I loved how their story unfolded in this second book and can’t wait to see where they take me in the third and final book.
Below is an excerpt of Prison Bait that is not available in book previews.
“Hola, Señor, buenas días.” Natalia’s breathless voice came on the line, settling the flurry of nerves in his gut.
“Buenas días,” he replied, his voice softening. The tension in his shoulders also melted. “I trust you have slept well?”
“Sí, Señor.”
“Where are you?” he asked, trying to join her and be next to her.
“At the dining table, eating breakfast.”
He’d rather her be eating him. Now, that would be a nice breakfast. In bed. “What are you having?”
“Tostada with mamón jam.”
Another image hit him, made his mouth water and his pants snug. “I’d like to taste some of that mamón on your nipples. Bare your breasts and spread it there for me.”
After the slight ruffle, Mateo proceeded, “Tell me how it feels.”
“A little warm from my toast, not as cold as I thought it would be out of the fridge,” Natalia said. “Argh!”
“What happened?”
“It dripped onto my yoga pants.”
He’d like that jam to drip somewhere else…
“Shed those, too,” he said…

Do you have any particular writing habits? (Listening to music, best time of day to write, etc.)
My favorite writing nook is on my bed with the option to cover with a duvet. This set-up helps me stay warm when I stay up late to write, because I can only have a concentrated amount of time to focus on writing after the kids go to bed.
So there I am on my bed, huddled close to the computer. A small desk is right next to my bed. I’ve got pillows to cushion me from knocking into the desk after I go to bed. However, the pillows also act as an awesome cushy surface to elevate my arms for the task of keyboarding in a way that puts very little strain on my wrists.
Sometimes I also enjoy a snack while I construct my stories—anything that doesn’t leave crumbs is ideal. Although I’m weary of liquids sloshing around, I do occasionally have either a hot or a cold drink or soup with me. At those times, I make it a point to finish that as soon as possible to reduce the chances of ruining my all-purpose equipment. I mean, I use my computer for everything – writing, reading, surfing, music, movies, etc.
What is the last movie you watched?
I can’t remember, but I can tell you that it’s not Fifty Shades of Grey. LOL
I’m going to wait for that movie to come out on DVD. Yes, I can wait that long—or at least long enough. 🙂
In the meantime, I’ve got no comment about the controversy going on right now around that film…
Where can we visit you online?
I’ve got a bad habit of using online dictionaries while I write. Yes, I know it’s bad because then I’m checking stuff out on social media. The sites I check the most are (in no particular order) Twitter, Facebook, Goodreads, Pinterest.
Best way to find out about my new releases is to sign up for my new release newsletter. Yes, I only send out an email when I have a new release. Yes, I used “new release” that many times on purpose. 🙂
Thanks for having me over here, Kate! It’s been a pleasure. 🙂
