What is one of your favorite things about writing?
Ooh, so many many things about writing I just love – the creativity, the creation of something from nothing; working from home, walking the dog when I can, when I want, the independence. Coming from a theatre writing background one of the most satisfying parts of the process was standing at the back of a theatre and hearing the audience laugh or cry or just watch their faces – it’s that reaction to my work that appealed to me, knowing I was creating an instant reaction, (whether good or bad!!), in someone. When I ghostwrote books for others that feeling was not there as I did not have the connection with the end product. Writing fiction lets me create and then the satisfaction comes to me when readers email me or choose to follow me on facebook. There is so much attention for all of our time now I feel honoured when people take time out to get in touch.
When you’re brainstorming for a new story, what usually comes first for you, the plot or the characters?
Plot, plot, plot. Only once has a character come first and I’m still working on that one.
Are you a plotter or a pantser?
Funny, I know I should be a plotter and at the start I plotted but as with all good stories and characters, they would go off on tangents so as long as it was credible I let it. The more I wrote the less I plotted but still believed I did until I wrote a book once and then looked back on my notes and it was a single sheet of paper.
When you’re writing, who is more in control, you or your characters?
Me…no, them…it should be me, but is it them? I do like it when they take over and that is something authors say and I think most readers look at them in disbelief – how can an imaginary character take over? Surely the author is in charge? True, we are but as we write snippets of conversation or dialogue or action slip into the brain as suggestions and you think, ‘Oh, interesting…’ and so you follow it.
Can you write sex scenes at any time or do you have to be “in the mood?”
I used to be able to write them anytime, part of the job but lately I find that I’m tending to ‘be in the mood’ – whatever and whenever that is. I’ve never been one to believe in writers block, so I’m not really into waiting for any kind of inspiration to write certain scenes so not sure what’s happening here J
What do you like best about writing erotic romance?
I always used to push the envelope when it came to sex scenes and was told to tone it down. When I first read an erotic book I thought, ‘Hang on, how come they get away with it?’ I’d found my genre, late in life, but I’d found it and with my history in comedy writing I think hot erotic scenes and humour are a great mix.
Would you tell us about your latest release?
I have 2 series on the go, the first book in each has just been published. Sex Comedy is the first in the adventures of Ethan Dwight and Play Around With Me is the start of a sporting series. I find having two series from complete opposite ends of the spectrum helps with the writing and they’re not competing for ideas – separate ideas tend to spring to mind for each series.
What are you working on now?
I’ve just finished books 2 & 3 in the sporting series and I’m editing some stand-alone books I finished a while back but have only just got round to editing. After editing the 3rd book in the sports series I think it’s my favourite out of all I’ve written – the next two answers relate to it.
What three words would the hero of your story use to describe his love interest?
Aloof. Forbidden. Intriguing.
What three words would the heroine of your story use to describe her love interest?
Hypnotic. Unpredictable. Fatal.
Do you have a favorite character or characters you feel especially close to?
Ethan Dwight from the acting books – with my background I know his world and have been there J Also, the hero of book 3 in the sports series, Dane, is a walk on the wild side and that I just love.
Would you tell us about yourself?
I live in the middle of the countryside, I love walking, relaxing, country pubs, theatre. I’ve had a varied career from being on stage and screen; stand-up comedy, ghostwriting, script writing.
What are your favorite genres to read and write?
Thrillers, murder mysteries, biographies and I’d like to say ‘The Classics’ but does anyone actually get through them? I don’t just mean one or two but lots of them? I’m ploughing through a Walter Scott at the moment and man it’s dry but for some reason, (probably pig headedness), I can’t put it down.
