Tyler’s scent grew even stronger and Lao recalled with a hint of embarrassment why he’d come here. He’d wanted to see the handsome mortal.
Simply wishing to taste the man’s blood didn’t mean he trusted him.
Tyler stepped out of a narrow hallway toward the back of the room. He headed toward the bar, but his gaze fell on Lao. Looking surprised, he approached.
“You should be resting,” Tyler said.
“I was bored.”
“Join me for a drink.” The doctor lightly cupped Lao’s elbow. A strange sensation shot through Lao at Tyler’s touch.
Again their gazes locked and Tyler swallowed. Lao had zeroed in on Tyler’s heartbeat and heard it quicken. Obviously the mortal returned his attraction. Seducing him should be easy.
With a slight nod, Lao followed Tyler to a corner booth. He almost admired the way the human maneuvered about the dark room. Tyler fit in too well among vampires. Such a man could be dangerous. Vampire hunters often tried to blend in and win the confidence of their victims before destroying them. Lulling vampires into a sense of security was one of the only ways weak mortals could fight them and win.
They sat facing each other and Tyler glanced around the room. Seeing the deadly looks aimed at Lao from various guests and staff members, he said, “Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea.”
“It’s all right. I’m used to such warm welcomes.”
“Doesn’t that bother you?”
“Because some of these fools believe I’m wrong and consider Dark Rhythm evil? Not in the least. They have no idea how many hunters we have thwarted and how many times their lives have been saved because of our diligence.”
A faint smile played around Tyler’s finely drawn lips, which looked so pink and kissable within the frame of his golden beard. “You’re trying to tell me you’re just misunderstood?”
