When you’re brainstorming for a new story, what usually comes first for you, the plot or the characters?
Usually, it’s the first line or scene of the book. That tells me the mood and gives me the teaser, if you will, in terms of the plot and what’s in store. Once I tap into that hook, I think about the characters and what would have led them to get to that point in the story.
When you’re writing, who is more in control, you or your characters?
Definitely, the characters. In Promising, I had to toss out entire scenes once I got to writing them because my character, Kira, just wouldn’t truly do what I had set out for her to do, at least not the way I had envisioned it. For the most part, I don’t force the characters into a certain path. I set up obstacles and allow them to tell me how they would manage it. Of course, there are define sign posts that they have to reach, but the path to get there is primarily dependent on them.
Would you tell us about your latest release?
Promising is the second novel in my futuristic New Adult romance trilogy, which tells the story of Kira Metallurgist, a young woman starting out on her own at the age of twenty-one. This novel places Kira in even more complex and so challenging situations, in particular, the love triangle she finds herself in with Gannon and Tai, navigating the politics around her career ambitions and coming to terms with her family’s many secrets. Promising is an angst-filled romance set against a dramatic backdrop that resonates with readers – whether lovers of stories in contemporary or futuristic settings.

What are you working on now?
Do you have an excerpt from your latest release you would like to share?
Absolutely! Please visit my website at http://rebelmillerbooks.com/excerpt-from-promising/ to read the entire first chapter from the novel.
What three words would the hero of your story use to describe his love interest?
Since Promising includes a love triangle, it depends on which hero! However, I think both Gannon and Tai would agree that Kira is frustrating, ambitious and selfless (sometimes to a fault!)

Do you have any particular writing habits? (Listening to music, best time of day to write, etc.)
I can write at any time of the day, but I MUST listen to music while doing so. Having said that, when doing my editing or revisions, I take the headphones off. In my other life, I’m a freelance communications professional, so I spend a lot of time editing copy. I approach the editing phase for my novels the same way I do my contract communications work. I put on my editor hat and remove all distraction, even my beloved music, so I can read through the material objectively as a reader would.
What is your favorite comfort food?
Goodness! Anything bread works for me, but I’m a diehard fan of Pinot Grigio and caramel popcorn … Therein lies the reason, I exercise four to five days a week!
Rebel Miller is a contemporary and futuristic romance author who overindulges in Pinot Grigio, caramel popcorn and an eclectic mix of movies, music and angst-filled romance novels.
