What is one of your favorite things about writing?
Creating characters- their motivations, ticks and all the things that make them as fully formed as possible.
When you’re brainstorming for a new story, what usually comes first for you, the plot or the characters?
I think it’s a little of both, honestly. With Her Love and Regrets, I was stunned that the first draft literally poured out of me within a few weeks. But I knew it lacked a lot in terms of accuracy for the sub context, and some key plot issues, but I needed to get it out. then I took my time and went back and gave it the level of depth that was critical.
Are you a plotter or a pantser?
Again, I’m a little of both. With Her Love and Regrets, the process was more panther, but the next book in the series was carefully plotted. The final book in the Trilogy was a combination. By that time I knew the characters extremely well so it was a matter of working through their arc.
When you’re writing, who is more in control, you or your characters?
The characters (once formed) take over. I have to be true to them. As a reader, it drives me insane when plot twists are introduced that make no sense for the characters I’ve come to know.
Can you write sex scenes at any time or do you have to be “in the mood?”
That’s funny! Yeah, so I can write them anytime and that usually puts me in the mood-I have a very vivid imagination!
What do you like best about writing?
For the most part, I enjoy everything about the creative process. I love that spark of an idea that begins to take shape through characters which in turn drive action.
What is the most difficult thing about writing?
Getting that spark. But over the years I’ve come to understand that sparks happen when you are open to them coming from the least expected places.
What do you like about writing series books?
I don’t think I’ll write another series. However, what I loved about it was I didn’t have to let the characters go so quickly, and yet I made sure that each was an independent work that stood on its own merit.
What is one of your favorite ways to learn about your characters?
This is an excellent question-and tough. Believe it or not, I actually ‘hear’ them. As I’m searching for their voice, there is a internal process that I think links my origins as an actor. Once I hear them, it makes me search a little deeper for each character’s emotional truth to round out the stories and arcs.
