Interview with Alexandria Lane
Where are you from?
A small town in Illinois called Carbonsdale, but now I live near Northwestern in Chicago.
What is your job?
I am a full-time student at Northwestern, and I am working for a doctorate in art history. However, in order to have money to buy…well…anything, I also work part time at the University library on campus.
Are you a people person or a lone wolf?
Very much a lone wolf. I get annoyed if people think of me a “librarian,” or a dorky academic, but I’m not the most outgoing person in the world. My roommate, Marisa, is definitely my opposite – she goes out looking for trouble. But I’m pretty happy in my family room with a pint of ice cream.
Do you have any special powers or skills?
I am a T.A. for introductory art history classes, and I’ve learned what all teachers call “The Look.” I can peer down over the edge of my glasses and glare, and just about any student will at least have the decency to look uncomfortable or apologetic.
What is your main goal in life?
Until I med Tad, it was just to get my phd and then get a good teaching position at a relatively prestigious university. When I met him, though, I decided I also may want to add a hot guy for a “happily ever after” to my list of goals.
Do you or did you ever have a mentor?
Not really. Marisa, my roommate, is my rock – she’s like my sister. But I wouldn’t say she’s my mentor.
Who is your greatest enemy and why?
Guys who go to college on trust funds and squander their parents’ money drinking and partying all the time. I didn’t have much growing up, and I’ve paid my way for just about everything – it makes me angry to see people with so much handed to them and how they feel entitled.
Who is your closest friend?
Right now, Marisa and Tad are both closest to me.
Who is your love interest?
Tad…even though, technically, he has a trust fund and comes from a lot of money. He’s different than most of those other guys, though.
What is your favorite thing about Tad?
Hm…is this PG-rated? Just kidding. I like that he likes me for me. I also like that he has his own secrets and struggles, and is different than most of the guys I’ve met.
What makes Tad sexy?
He’s good looking, obviously…but more than that, he’s smart, and funny, and has a fierce passion for what he loves.
What is the most annoying thing about Tad?
Definitely that he hasn’t decided what he is going to “be when he grows up.” To me, it seems simple that he should pursue his academic career – but he’s torn by his loyalties to his mother.
Describe Tad in three words.
Explosive. Intelligent. Passionate.
What was the last gift you gave Tad?
I’m not sure I’ve given him anything! He doesn’t expect gifts or anything – he’s not a materialistic guy. And he knows I have no money.
Where would you take Tad on a dream vacation?
Italy! It would be romantic, visiting Tuscany or wandering around and getting lost in Venice. Plus, the art!
Do you have a secret fantasy?
To have a private tour of the Louvre with Tad, and then to have a romantic dinner overlooking the Eifel Tower.
Describe yourself in three words.
Smart. Driven. Intellectual.
Do you have pets?
No! I’m barely home, I probably couldn’t even keep a fish alive.
Share a favorite memory.
When Tad showed up to my office with a sunflower as a peace offering. Then things got…steamy.
What is your favorite food?
Pizza. I’m still a grad student!
What kind of music do you listen to?
Mostly 80s and 90s alternative stuff – I’m into the vintage. I have a Pearl Jam poster in my room.
What is your favorite way to travel?
I love the trains in Chicago – they’ll get you almost anywhere, they’re cheap, and you can read while you ride.
Name one piece of clothing you wouldn’t want to live without.
My Doc Martens. They’re old and beat up, but I love them.
What is the best advice anyone ever gave you?
A teacher in high school told me to follow my dreams, even if they weren’t practical. I have always lived by that advice.
If you could give your past self a piece of advice, what would it be?
Don’t be so quick to judge people. Just because someone looks a certain way doesn’t mean they’ll act a certain way, too.
What is your idea of a perfect date?
Going to the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art and wandering around for hours, then having a nice meal. And the perfect date would end up in bed with ice cream and Stephen Colbert on the TV.
What makes you happy?
Beautiful things, and beautiful people. Tad is a beautiful person – not just his looks, but the person that he is.
What makes you angry?
When people don’t appreciate what they have, or they think they’re entitled to something.
How do you like to spend your free time?
Reading, taking walks, going to museums. Hanging out with my best friend, and of course, Tad.
Do you prefer one lover or multiple lovers?
I’m monogamous.
What is the craziest thing you’ve ever done?
Hm…I’m not usually a crazy person. Once in college, though, I snuck into the Art Institute of Chicago without paying, because I had no extra money. I felt so guilty about it, though, I sent a note and the admission fee a month later when I got a paycheck.
Do you have any tattoos or piercings?
My ears are pierced, but I’m a baby when it comes to needles!
