Interview with Lori Osterberg
Would you tell us about yourself?
I’m a reinvention junkie. After running several successful businesses, I found myself growing restless and in need of a new project when my daughter graduated from high school and moved to college. So I convinced my husband to sell our home, get rid of most of our stuff, all for the chance of slow traveling the world for awhile. For us, that means moving to a new location every couple of years or so, to experience areas like the locals. Right now we’re in the Pacific Northwest, where I spend a few hours each morning developing new characters and writing new stories.
What are your favorite genres to read and write?
I write romance, so of course I love to read it as well. At any given moment, I have a half dozen books or so on my desk. I love non-fiction – it comes from my years as a small business owner. I love memoirs and biographies. I also enjoy science fiction and fantasy, and have been reading a lot of futuristic utopia books at the moment. I find future trends fascinating, and am looking at incorporating that into a future romance series.
How long have you been writing?
Forever seems like a cliche answer, but it’s true. I have diaries from when I was a small child. I’ve kept journals pretty much since I graduated college. My first small business was a wedding photography business. After several years of success, I was contacted by a publishing house to write a small business photography marketing book, and the rest as they say is history. I’ve written a dozen non-fiction business books. But after my husband and I uprooted our lives for slow travel, I’ve finally been able to pursue my dream of writing fiction.
When you’re brainstorming for a new story, what usually comes first for you, the plot or the characters?
I always see my plot first and use it to guide me to understand the characters that would fit into the situation. That’s how my Destination series was born. I love reading travel magazines. Several have regular columns where they send a reporter to a mystery location for a weekend and have them explore without an advanced itinerary. That eventually turned into the Destination Roulette concept I use in my Destination series, where people in an airport have a chance to spin the wheel and leave immediately for the destination that stops on the wheel. And of course the romance part of it grew from there because why not? If someone wins a free trip to an exotic location, romance would naturally follow, right?
Would you tell us about your latest release?
My latest book is Destination Mexico City, the second in the series. It’s about a woman who is tired of her job, sick of traveling every single week of the year. She’s married, but isn’t sure how long it’s going to last as they only see each other one or two weekends a month. She craves a normal life, one where the two of them come home and cook dinner together, see each other every day, go to bed together at night. When she finds Destination Roulette on the way home from a business trip, she jumps at the chance to get away from it all, contemplate life, and look for a little reinvention in her life.
What are you working on now?
Just like I read multiple books at the same time, I have several projects I’m working on as well. I’m currently writing the third book in the Destination series, Destination Vancouver. Instead of playing Destination Roulette, this story is about how Destination Roulette began. It’s the story of Ann Mathison, the business owner who developed the game, and how she found romance while building the business of her dreams. I like backstories, thinking about how things would happen if stories continued beyond the pages of a book. That’s how this story came to be, after I’d put the first two in the series to paper. I’m also finishing up a standalone book that looks at finding love again in midlife when spouses die and you’re facing life alone. I’ve had a couple of friends face this in the past few years – a husband died of heart disease and a wife died of cancer. At any age, we want closeness and intimacy. So this book takes a look at what that might look like in the lives of two 50-somethings looking for love again after devastating losses.

Author Bio
After running several successful businesses, Lori Osterberg decided it was time to reinvent herself once again. Facing an empty nest and too much normal suburbia lifestyle in front of her, she talked her husband into selling off their 3300 square foot home, sell two-thirds of their stuff, all for the chance to slow travel the world. When not traveling, she finds a friend or two to share a good bottle of wine, visits tea factories, dances the night away at outdoor concerts, eats her way through farmers markets, and daydreams about the next set of characters she lives vicariously through. She’s currently writing books and living the dream in the Pacific Northwest.
