Guest Post: Behind the scenes, by Mary Martinez

Behind the scenes of what? My characters’ lives.  My characters are my friends, I know them. I have walked the streets of their neighborhoods. My stories are set not in my own neighborhood or even state. They are set in places I’ve visited and loved. Most the time though, just visiting doesn’t mean you know the place.

In my Beckett Series, that is the case. I love New York City and Brooklyn, I have a son who lives in Brooklyn and we visit often. I’ve also visited with my friends who have indulged in my efforts to explore the neighborhoods, pubs, parks, and various other places my characters go. Where they have their good and bad moments.

Each character of the Beckett series lives in either Manhattan or Brooklyn. The family grew up in the Brooklyn where their parents still live. The Elders are the nucleus of the family most of the series begin and end at the Elders for some type of family event.

Before each series I visit their neighborhood and find little things about it that I can create scenes during the story. In Reagan’s story, Illusion the fourth book of the series, she lives in Fort Green Brooklyn very close to Putnum’s Pub. Great little place and a favorite meeting place of all the Beckett’s.

I’ve always loved writing stories set in places I love. The character’s talk to me, and I can picture where they are. It helps me write the story.

Watching Jenny is set in San Diego. One of my other favorite places. Several scenes are in Mission Beach, including one in the Coaster Saloon. Back when I used to visit there were four old times who would sit at the sidewalk bar. They made an appearance in the book of course, though they’ve since changed the Saloon to a younger more yuppie version. I’m very disappointed.

But mostly Jenny called to me through music. The idea came to me while driving to the day job and I was listening to the radio. No Doubt came on, and Jenny was born. The story grew from there. And she told me, in the way that characters do, she lived in San Diego.
