Most of us have guilty pleasures. In fiction I generally prefer antiheroes or redeemable villains over golden boys and I’m not guilty about it, but when it comes to brutal horror movie villains, admitting attraction can be a little uncomfortable and make you wonder how you find these monsters so enticing. Well inappropriate people can sometimes be charismatic. It doesn’t mean you agree with or condone what they do. Fiction allows exploration of dark fantasies, whether it’s edgy romance or traditional horror.
Here are two horror villains that are among my guilty pleasures.
Thomas Sharpe from Crimson Peak – This literal lady killer is not only easy on the eyes, but his vulnerability makes you want to believe he can be redeemed. Maybe he’s not all bad, but he’s certainly bad enough.
Pinhead from the Hellraiser movies – He is one horrible demon, but morbidly sexy. Maybe it’s the leather, his tortured past (present and future), or his measured stride, but he’s fascinating. Just don’t get too close.
