Scarlet Nights 3: Feasting with the Enemy
by Kate Hill
Erotic, Vampire
Blurb:
After more than a century sharing a bed and fighting at each other’s backs, vampire warriors Blair and May have forged an unbreakable bond.
Now the mysterious New Reign is seeking additional members. Their philosophy — recruit or destroy. Using mind manipulation, they stir up dark memories from the past to tempt Blair and May into killing each other.
Given the chance to resurrect his murdered first wife and children, will Blair now sacrifice the woman he loves — his wife and blood child, May?
Excerpt:
“We’re more alike than either of us want to think,” Disdain said.
“Is that why you walked out on our lessons way back when? I worked my ass off to pass your stupid class and –”
“Oh yes. You and I do cling to the past, don’t we? We hold grudges. We have guilt.” Disdain spoke through clenched teeth. He stepped so close to Blair that they were nearly touching. “That’s what the New Reign thinks it can use against us. Your murdered family. They’ll try to use them to turn you away from what you know is right.”
Blair’s stomach clenched. “How do you know that?”
“Because they tried to use my murdered family against me.”
This revelation shocked Blair. “Your family was murdered?”
“Eons ago, but I’ll never forget.” Disdain held Blair’s gaze. For the first time Blair saw him as something more than an unfeeling beast. Disdain hated emotional displays. He fancied himself a heartless monster — a manipulator. Superior to all the fools who were ruled by their heart.
“That’s why you refused to finish my lessons all those years ago,” Blair said. A wry smile tugged at his lips. “My memories struck too close to home for you, didn’t they, oh ancient master?”
Ignoring his taunts, Disdain continued coolly, “One last thing, boy. When the New Reign tempts you, and I know they will because they want the best warriors they can recruit –”
Blair looked up dramatically.
“What’s wrong?’ Giacomo asked.
“I believe the great Disdain just paid me a compliment, so I thought the sky might fall.”
Disdain curled his lip. “They will most likely use someone closer to you than you think to lure you or attempt to destroy you.”
“Why are you telling me this?” Blair asked.

What an interesting bit between mentor and former student. Nice foreshadowing of what is to come
interesting foreshadowing
I like the wry humor. We don’t enough of that in most paranormal romance.
Thank you, Holly!
