Interview with Dylan Haynes
Where are you from?
There’s only one place I call home, and that’s Willow Springs, Vermont. I’ve lived there all my life, except for the five years I spent in New York City drumming for an indie rock band, Fortune’s Glory. Only about three thousand people live and work in Willow Springs, but tourists come from all over the world in the winter to ski and snowboard in the national forest that’s my backyard. During the summer, the Fourth of July festival draws in a big crowd. Even though I love New York, it doesn’t compare to my hometown.
What is your job?
I’m an ex-professional drummer, and now I’m an instructor at Haynes Music Academy, my parents’ music school. I play a multitude of instruments, but I usually just teach kids how to rock the drums. Whenever they succeed and hit a particularly hard note, I feel so damn proud of them. I love teaching.
I’m also a volunteer fireman. After so many years of partying and acting wild, I wanted to do something good and give back to the community where I’d come from. Being a fireman and a certified EMT helped me accomplish that goal.
Are you a people person or a lone wolf?
People person—I have to be since I’m a music teacher and a fireman.
What is your main goal in life?
I’d always wanted to become a famous musician, but my dreams changed when I was on that path of making it come true. I didn’t like the person I was turning into when I was touring and performing with Fortune’s Glory. The drugs, alcohol, and groupies distracted me from the music, so I quit before I ever got close to reaching stardom.
My biggest goal now is simple, and I’ve already fulfilled it. Now, I just gotta keep it. I have a good, clean job and a loving woman at my side. Life couldn’t be better.
Who is your love interest?
Erica Timberly. She’s everything to me. Yeah, I had some girlfriends in high school and I slept with the groupies I met in clubs, but I never fell hard for any of them. None of them ever knew the real me, who I was inside. Erica was different. She called me out on my bullshit and drew me in.
What is your favorite thing about Erica?
*Dylan snorts* What do I not like? She’s an excellent violinist and loves music as much as I do. She went through hell with her last boyfriend, but she’s still kind and willing to put her heart on the line. Her strength and her desire to never give up is definitely a turn-on, and I’m damn glad she picked me. I couldn’t be prouder of her.
Describe Erica in three words.
Beautiful, stubborn, vulnerable
Describe yourself in three words.
Levelheaded, talented, protective
What is your favorite food?
I absolutely freakin’ love my mom’s creamy vegetarian penne casserole. It’s a dish stuffed with penne noodles, broccoli, black beans, tomatoes, onions, and cheese in a thick milk sauce. Sound good to you? That’s great! My author, Amber, included the recipe in the back of my book. Go ahead and try it. Let me know what you think.
What kind of music do you listen to?
Rock n’ roll, baby! And grunge. Don’t forget about punk rock.
What is the best advice anyone ever gave you?
My older brother, Birley, once told me I can’t change the past and that I have to move on from my mistakes. He’s right. The past is just that—the past. The man I am today is the one I choose to be. The life I want is the one I strive for everyday. And I gotta say, I’m pretty happy with the way things turned out.
How do you like to spend your free time?
As I said before, I’m a helluva drummer, but I also play several other instruments. Playing any kind of instrument is a great way to relax and let off some steam. Besides that, I like to hike in the Green Mountain National Forest. Erica and I sometimes do that together. I also like to go fishing with my dad and brother.
Do you prefer one lover or multiple lovers?
One, definitely. Before I met Erica, I sometimes played around with more than one groupie at a time, but that wild life eventually grew old. Nowadays, I’m all about relationships and keeping my woman happy.
Do you have any tattoos or piercings?
I have a red dragon tattoo twisting around the biceps of my left arm. Erica loves licking and petting it.
