How long have you been writing?
I’ve been writing since the dark ages when oneused a typewriter and carbon paper. I’ve been published for fifty years and a few months but there was a time when I returned to work as a nurse to help fund children through college.
Do you have any particular writing habits?
Writing habits. I write with pen and lined paper for the rough draft and usually a second or third draft. Though I can write anywhere, I find sitting in my recliner with a clipboard produces more words.
If you could be any kind of shapeshifter, what kind would you be?
Being as I love cats large and small, if I shape-shifted I would choose one of the big cats. A jaguar, a panther or a tiger. No lions. I think they are rather mangy beasts.
What is one of your favorite things about writing?
When you’re brainstorming for a new story, what usually comes first for you, the plot or the characters?
Once I have the idea, the first thing that comes to mind is genre since I write in several. I do a bit of playing around with this and then the story flows into place complete with characters.
Are you a plotter or a pantser?
I sort of fall somewhere between the two. I’m not sure what you can say I am. I write what I call the story outline dividing it into chapters and do a brief outline of each chapter. Then I start writing and flow with the words wherever they take me. The beginning doesn’t change nor does the ending. The middle often takes different directions.
Can you write sex scenes at any time or do you have to be “in the mood?”
Sex scenes for me take a lot of thought to make them fit the personality of the characters. I usually write things like “They make love.” “This is the first kiss and return to them once the rough draft is completed and I really know my characters.
Do you find it harder to write novels or short stories?
I find writing short stories to be very difficult though that is how my career began. Since moving to novels, I find in short stories an ability to remain short. I’ve no problem with novellas but really short, I do.
Would you tell us about your latest release?
The Children of Fyre is my latest release. This is the fourth and final book in the Island of Fyre series. The wizards banished from the Island are stirring again. Three of the main characters are the children of the heroes and heroines of the first three books. The fourth character is Cerene, a child of the wizards who is slated to become a breeder, the only place for a female of wizard descent. There are five drag one, a green to guide the other dragons. The four main characters bond with these dragons. Together they fight the wizards in a battle of good and evil.
What are you working on now?
Working on Forgotten Dreams a contemporary romance, the fifth in the Moon Child series. The Cancer heroine meets up with her high school hero, A Leo and an acion movie star.
Do you have a favorite character or characters you feel especially close to?
Though I don’t feel close to the villain in Code Blue, he is my favorite villain.
BIO:
I’ve been in this game for a long time and been published for 50 years. I live in the scenic Hudson River Valley with my husband of sixty years. I’ve four children. My youngest is a bi-racial adopted daughter. I have seven grandchildren. Once I was a nurse but now I am retired and write full time. Out there are a lot of books I’ve written, at least 50 but probably more. I’m published in short stories, poetry and novels. I bill myself as an eclectic writer since I write romance – contemporary, paranormal and fantasy, Cozy mysteries and YA fantasy under J.L. Walters. I’ve also published several non-fiction books. One on writing with my friend, Jane Toombs.
